Wombatant Report post Posted October 11, 2012 (edited) I'm sure others have made these, but since there are no pictures or threads stating such, I'll have 2 mins of warm fuzzy feelings of pretending to be first at something. Unless someone minds of course. In which case I'll fold in an apologetic fit like a wet paper bag. Basically a paracord bracelet, made with leather instead of said cord. Used a strap cutter that cuts in a circular pattern instead of straight to get a long enough strap. Strap is/was 2mm thick and 3mm wide. For the two-tone, the leather was dyed before braiding. Noted that due to either my lack of skill or the material used, the finished product tends to become shorter than expected. Way, way shorter. PS. Apologies for the poor quality and large size of pictures. I blame society. And the poor quality of the camera in my cheap phone. HellfireJack Report post Posted October 12, 2012 Looks good. I learned how to tie the cobra knot/solomon's bar using leather too but you can keep your warm fuzzies. I have no need for them. You'll want to finish the leather before tying these bracelets. I'd recommend you wax them pretty heavily. If you don't finish them first they'll get slimy when they get damp and then they'll turn into a piece of sandpaper on your wrist when they dry. Also, not that it really matters if they're just for looks, these types of bracelets are "survalist" in nature and that's why they make them out of paracord. If you get into a situation you then have a handy piece of paracord to use if needed. If you don't finish the leather before hand you'll have a dried out piece of leather that will be of no practical use to anyone. Even if you do finish them the leather is going to hold the curls and wavy shapes from the knots when you untie them.
Horrrk Report post Posted October 12, 2012 Yeah, liking that Wombatant.. I was a bit bored last week and having come across some old guy lines whilst clearing my camping gear..I found that braiding them into a square weave was most satisfying for my head..lol Not as good as yours, especially when on a leatherwork forum, of course.. lol Regards Phil I've got it as an adornment on my keychain.. Wombatant Report post Posted October 12, 2012 Yeah, I am aware the original purpose is for survivalist thingmejigs. These however are merely for looks. Though I suspect you *can* take 'em apart and do stuff with the strap, I wouldn't hold up any hopes of doing anything useful. The plain one was made purely for testing purposes to see if it was even possible to make a bracelet like that, therefore it wasn't treated beforehand. All the rest I've made have been finished properly.
mirasong Report post Posted December 11, 2012 When my brother heard i was making bracelets with leather, he wanted to know if I could make a "paracord" bracelet with certain colors. I tried making leather "paracord" bracelets on my own, with not much luck. I tried suede, and I also tried cutting strips of leather, but the type of leather was too thin I think. The suede is hard to do because has so much friction. Thank you for putting this on here! I am going to try again!
chancey77 Report post Posted December 12, 2012 I like that look, I have been working on a 2 color square knot for a while, it takes forever! I like the bracelet idea. You useually see them made out of hemp but I think this is he first time I have seen a leather one:) Thumbs up!
