Homemade Stitching Pony

Recommended Posts

This is a homemade stitching pony that I made about 12 years ago out of some scraps I had lying around. It is the ideal height, for me, while sitting in my desk chair or my recliner while lacing. I designed the jaws to swivel on the footboard because I like to have my project lengthways to me while saddle stitching and crossways to me while double and triple loop lacing. The jaws have two locking positions for this purpose. The clamp on the jaws has multiple teeth for adjusting to different thicknesses and is easy to make quick changes without having to have constant foot pressure to hold the piece in place, so I can get up to get more coffee. The interior strap is also adjustable just in case it ever has to hold something larger than normal. It is a very simple design that has served me well, I have used this stitching pony to stitch or lace many, many projects over the past several years. Very interesting construction . Well done ,superb finish ,no short cuts here done first class to the last degree . I like it a lot . Thank you for showing us your work . As a craftsman thank you for caring enough to do this well and showing us the way . My most sincere compliments ,simply put "I like things well done " This to me meets all the requirements for that . The one thing I get from seeing this project : It says loud and clear : I Care !!!!! That to me says it all ! Nothing more needs to be added . Elegant ,pleasing , warm ,show me more ,all come to mind when I see it . Bill

Thank you very much for the awsome compliments, Bluesman! I did put my heart into this when I was building it. I made this from start to finish with my hands and hand tools. the only power tools I owned at the time were a jigsaw and a drill. I did all the shaping with a hand rasp and sand paper. the metal plate with the teeth for holding the clamp shut was cut out with the jigsaw and smoothed down with a file. If anyone has any questions about how this was made feel free to ask, I'd be honored to help where I can.

Thank you,

Sam

The stitching pony is excellent. Thanks for sharing. I really want to make my own but I'm not sure where to start.

I'm on the hunt for some plans.

That's great the mechanics that you came up with are impressive, did you come up with that yourself or is that part taken out from something else?

Very nice, I like the swivel base. I am going to have to make one similar with that feature on it. Thanks for posting it.

Nice pony dude !

I have recently made a saddles clam that does the same sort of thing but is much simpler. I used some old oak barrel staves from a whiskey barrel that was scrap and chamfered them down a bit. I used 2 m8 bolts to hold it all together and some drum wingnuts to adjust the tension that look pretty nice.

I like the way I can use it just about anywhere and it is very simple and clean.

I will try and load a picture - not sure how to do this. The option seems to be greyed out !
