Dangerous Beans Report post Posted December 6, 2012 It's been a while since I've been on here, so I thought it about time I said Hi! Hi. Also a bit of a show off moment, I've been playing with the video camera, it's getting better but still a long was to go. this is a clip of me making a Bridle belt in Sedgwick 4mm lined with pigskin. I'd be interested in your thoughts. Nige

particle Report post Posted December 6, 2012 Hi Nigel - the video was great! Thank you for the slow motion portion where you showed your actual hand stitching method of wrapping the thread around the needle. Very informative. I have to admit, when you got to the portion where you were hand stitching the decorative stitching, my blood pressure rose - it was one of those "dang, still have more stitching to do!!!!" moments. LOL My hat's off to those of you that hand stitch all your work. You have much more patience than me. Can I ask where you get your wood boxes for your belt packaging? Or do you make them yourself? ReneeCanady Report post Posted December 6, 2012 Excellent video! I have to admit, I can NOT hold both needles and the awl at the same time lol. I love how you did the close up of the stitching method.

Anti19 Report post Posted December 6, 2012 Beautiful work! Thank you very much for your video! I have a few questions if you dont mind. I'm assuming the stitching punch you use is a Joseph Dixon. What is the punch size, and what awl (and awl size) do you use to enlarge the holes? Also, what size thread do you use? I'm looking to refine my stitching, and I understood that one of the best way to go would use a stitching punch like the one you use (Joseph Dixon, Vergez-Blanchard, etc.) but i'm reticent to buy an expensive punch if I dont know what kind of awl and thread would match it. Thank you very much!
David8386 Report post Posted December 6, 2012 That was a very well done video, and as stated above the slow motion parts were great. It was fun to watch thanks for posting it. David

Dangerous Beans Report post Posted December 7, 2012 (edited) Can I ask where you get your wood boxes for your belt packaging? Or do you make them yourself? Hi particle, I get them from a small craft supplier here in the UK. they are only a few pounds, a small price to pay for finishing of a nice job. http://www.ebay.co.u...d=280649102369 I'm assuming the stitching punch you use is a Joseph Dixon. The Pricking Iron I use is a Joseph Dixon, that one is 6 to the inch, I haven't used a Blanchard but one would expect the same results. I still use a wheel on occasion but nearly all my stitching is marked with an iron these days. The awl is an Osborn saddlers awl size 42, excellent bit of kit, it wont bend and is so consistent. I like it because its not sharp. the hole has been cut by the iron, a rounded awl opens the hole in the leather, rather than cutting it and as such the hole closes better making the stitching look smarter over time. The thread i use is tiger thread 1mm. I appreciate the Pricking Iron may seem expensive but the time it saves you over the wheel and awl method, it will pay for itself in no time. hope that helps. Dangerous Beans Report post Posted December 7, 2012 As an aside, I'm having a heap of fun with this video camera, I'm not very good, still working on getting the image sharper, but I do a lot of stitching and if it helps, i'll post more videos. PAMuzzle Report post Posted December 8, 2012 Absolutely great video. I like the closeups and slow motion of the awl and sewing technique. I have to get better at that. I am constantly putting my awl down. Thanks for the instruction. Doug

Dangerous Beans Report post Posted December 17, 2012 Thank you all for your support, I have a lot of mundane stuff on the bench at the moment, repairs, leads, collars and yet more belts. As soon as I get a nice or quirky job or something a bit different, ill do another video, unless there's anyone who would like to see something in particular. If so, shout up... I only need half an excuse. Love the video, nicely done. I also love the music. What is the name of the album or song? I would like to get a copy. Thanks. The music is by Hans Florian Zimmer it's the Beach Song, been one of my favourites for a while now. If you google it, I'm sure you'll find an album with it on.
