Members Murray Posted April 6, 2013 Members Report Posted April 6, 2013 Hello all, A friend of mine, who's still in the Navy, asked if I could make a full function wallet small. After some trial and error, I finally came up with a design that I liked. He also asked to have a "USN" anchor and his rate/rank on it. I jumped on this one as I am a retired Sailor and have not yet done anything Navy related. This is what came off the work bench - enjoy. Murray Quote
Members benlilly1 Posted April 6, 2013 Members Report Posted April 6, 2013 Nice looking wallet...logo matches a seat that I've done! Quote
Members Murray Posted April 6, 2013 Author Members Report Posted April 6, 2013 Us Sailors love that anchor. On a small scale that chain gave me alll sorts of trouble though. Still pleased with the end product. Quote
Members David8386 Posted April 6, 2013 Members Report Posted April 6, 2013 Looks nice, good detail, color, and the lacing looks good. David Quote
Members lesking Posted April 7, 2013 Members Report Posted April 7, 2013 Very nice those of us who have served with the Navy do love that anchor Quote
Members Murray Posted April 7, 2013 Author Members Report Posted April 7, 2013 Thanks David. Les, Thanks, shipmate. I have been retired for about 5 years and I got to feeling really nostalgic when my friend asked me to do this. Hooya. Quote
Members DoubleAdobe Posted April 7, 2013 Members Report Posted April 7, 2013 Hey there That is a good job, reminded me of an old pattern I have. I'll PM ya. Quote
Members bearachc Posted April 9, 2013 Members Report Posted April 9, 2013 I was going to ask how you did that chain, that logo looks really 'tight' for lack of a better term. Well, maybe 'clean' would be another way to put it, great work! Quote
Members Murray Posted April 9, 2013 Author Members Report Posted April 9, 2013 Thanks bear. How I did the chain - I took a jewelers screwdriver, filed the tip down a bit (to fit the curves) then just kinda pressed in the impressions. It took a while and my hand was pretty sore afterwards, but I think it turned out awesome. Thanks again. Quote
Members bearachc Posted April 9, 2013 Members Report Posted April 9, 2013 Nice repurposing of a tool! Quote
Members Murray Posted April 9, 2013 Author Members Report Posted April 9, 2013 I also used it for the lettering on the other side of the wallet. It was the only thing I could find that was small enough and slim enough to make the impressions I wanted. Thanks again, Bear. Quote
Members Murray Posted April 10, 2013 Author Members Report Posted April 10, 2013 Thanks Nappers, he (the guy I made it for) loves it. Quote
Members aguilerag Posted April 11, 2013 Members Report Posted April 11, 2013 Very nice looking work. I myself am a squid also. Made ITC before I got me a medical discharge in Afghanastan. Hooyaa brother!! Quote

Members vhakra Posted April 20, 2013 Members Report Posted April 20, 2013 Well you've inspired me to make a wallet like this for a naval friend I grew up with now! Awesome work! Quote
Members Murray Posted April 20, 2013 Author Members Report Posted April 20, 2013 Thanks Vhakra. Like I said earlier, its the first "Navy" thing I've made since I retired (and since I started leatherwork). Quote
Members WayOutWatty Posted July 2, 2013 Members Report Posted July 2, 2013 Murray - As in ATC Murray H. - used to be stationed at NASWI? That pic looks familiar, man - hard to tell with the goatee.. Quote

Members Matt Alsaker Posted July 3, 2013 Members Report Posted July 3, 2013 Very cool wallet. I've just started trying my hand at them. The carving turned out very nice. Quote
Members Murray Posted July 3, 2013 Author Members Report Posted July 3, 2013 Thanks, Matt. It all started with my brother wanting a small full function wallet. This is what I cam up with and folks seem to like it. BTW, I dig the skull outline you did, sometimes less is more. Quote
