Flame Biker's Wallet

Recommended Posts

Here is my latest work in progress....a biker's wallet for a guy who owns a BBQ catering company. His truck that pulls the bbq trailer has the same flames on it...so does his business card.

I'm planning on dying/staining wallet a distressed brown. Thought about painting the flames but I haven't done any cova color or airbrushing yet so I don't want to ruin this one.

If anyone has any cool staining ideas, please give 'em to me! I was thinking about a brown base with black over it and wipe some off to give distressed look?

I really, really like the simple design that at the same times fits so well to your BBQ guy! I think adding color would take away from how effective it is. Your idea of adding a little character with the brown/black combo sounds right on the mark. Be sure to post how it turns out!

Looking good so far. I'm with Tracy about the colouring, better try out that cova colour a bit first. I was just forced to try some white cova and think it was hard to get it on evenly.

Hellcat,

I REALLY am a fan of flames and those are great! Your BBQ guy will love it!

Wanna try something cool? (I did this to a motorcycle seat and it turned out spectacular) Take AtomWax and rub a very light coat on the flames only, allow it to dry, then buff it out. Once it's buffed, stain your wallet. You'll see that the AtomWax acts as a restraint for the stain and you end up with lightly stained flames over a heavily stained background! Looks awesome!

Can't wait to see it finished!

Biker's gonna like that when it's done! I sure like it.

Post PIX when finished please.

Hellcat, ever try using Sharpies for color.? I use the Bic permanent markers with the fine point. You can practice on some scrap to blend the color on the flames. I used them on a seat and the color held up a lot better than I thought it would.

Great flame job. I'm with Troy on the coloring. But i've become a huge fan of browns. If you wanna color the flames i would use dye not paint seeing as how it's a wallet. But,,, again i don't have much experience with paint. I used all eco flo dyes on this cover click here .

Thanks ya'll for your comments! I'm going to try and find some Atomwax and try it on some scraps before I work on it some more this weekend.

I'll post the pics when I'm finished.

Thanks guys!

Okay, I finished it. But I'm not happy with the dye job. I tried something new. I put the atom wax on the flames..let it dry and buffed...then put on coffee brown eco-flo stain. It looked great! Color was beautiful and perfectly even. Then, I let it dry and put on the satin sheen...well, it lifted up some of the color. With every stroke, color came off. I had to decide to go in horizontal direction rather than circles and what was left gave the wallet a "woodgrain" effect.

The BBQ guy I sold it to absolutely loved it but I was dissappointed on how it turned out. Anyway, I'll do another flame one soon and try another process.

I think some of the old Tandy finishes don't work with the newer Eco-Flo? Any advice?

If the customer likes it that's what really matters. I've tried some of the new eco stuff and don't care for it. Try using Fiebing's Oil dye, good stuff. Lately I've been using the Bic equivalent of Sharpies with very good results.
