paracordman Report post Posted October 27, 2013 I am making a phone case for my grandpa. But it is one of those phones that is the size of a tablet LOL. I am having a problem with the pocket for it. I don't want it to be like the multi-tool case on the right to where if it is tipped upside down it falls out. But I don't want it to be so tight that is impossible to pull out like it is on the left. How can I make it a little more easier to pull out? Thanks. Basically Bob Report post Posted October 27, 2013 I would make the case tight. wrap the phone in saran wrap and dampen the inside edges of the case with a wetted cloth (just wet, not dripping wet) wrapped around a bone folder, or ruler (don't soak the leather, just dampen it). Next, jam the phone in the case. Let it sit like that until it is pretty much dry. If it is too tight after doing that, you could cut out a thin piece of cardboard the same size as the phone and wrap it in saran again, dampen the leather and jam that set up in the case. Cameroo Report post Posted October 27, 2013 You could make a small opening on the bottom side, just large enough to get a finger in to push the phone up, similar to this case I made a while ago.
paracordman Report post Posted October 27, 2013 Thanks but I didnt sew the bottom closed and I still had trouble pushing it throught. I think I might try it with veg tanned leather, I think the leather I used for the pocket is chrome tanned.
electrathon Report post Posted October 27, 2013 If a phone case fits snugly it will tend to keep buttons depressed on your phone, draining the battery.
Dwight Report post Posted October 28, 2013 If I understand you correctly, . . . it is a small tablet, . . . but yet a big phone. I make my "I phone / android phone" cases with a solid bottom, . . . several layers of leather sandwiched together about 3/4 inch wide and the thickness of the phone plus maybe 1/16 of an inch. I then make a board the height, width, and thickness of the phone, again plus 1/16 of an inch. I wrap 6/7 oz veggie tan around the form, . . . wet it, . . . and let it dry. I don't overlap, . . . I make the joint in the back, . . . riveting the belt loop to the back. I have never put a flap across the top with velcro on the front, . . . but as security is important to you, . . . you may want to. The enclosed pics are a much smaller phone, . . . but the basic idea of the case. It's several years old, . . . is my "work" phone carrier, . . . and just allows the top 3/4 inch to peek out to grab when it rings or I have to make a call. It goes up on the roof when I'm shingling, . . . on the mower or tractor, . . . in the car or jeep, . . . haven't lost it yet. May God bless, Dwight
OdinUK Report post Posted October 28, 2013 The phone cases I have done so far are the slip cases. They are wet formed and fit snugly. (2mm thick veg tan leather). I have a semicircular notch cut out of the bottom and top to make it easy to remove. There are pictures in my Gallery and website if you'd like to have a look. I wouldn't consider using chrome tan for such a case. But that's just my opinion. Phones tend to have the screen/buttons locked when not in use so the buttons being pressed in the case has never been a problem.

Northmount Report post Posted October 28, 2013 A certain BB phone in a tight case will lock up. Have to remove the battery to reset it. So, yes, be careful about how tight it is and whether the buttons are being held in. Tom
electrathon Report post Posted October 28, 2013 My LG android phone was going dead in 4-6 hours. I thought it was the phone till someone else told me what was happening (it was brand new so I though it was a phone issue).Tossed my custom made case for a cheap store one and the battery life issue was instantly fixed. I have since made a nice leather one that fits a little on the loose side. The phone is happy and I am now that I am not using a cheap vinyl case. Interesting so I definitely need to make it a little on the loose side. Ok thanks.
Bob Blea Report post Posted October 28, 2013 I've had lots of problems where I work with Blackberry's running down because the cases they were in were too tight and it was pushing buttons. At times we had to disable the side buttons for the camera to get them to stop. I would definitely recommend a looser case. Bob
