steering wheel

Recommended Posts

Howdy AllThe steering wheel cover on my wife's truck wore through. We looked and looked but couldn't find a cover that looked worth a dang. So I had this bright idea!! I would cover the effected area with a multi string knot. Yea I should of known better but what the heck. I got it done and I still have a crick in my neck. So I tells the wife next time I have a great idea just tell me to forget it. If I ever do another one the steering wheel is coming off.

Sorry about the extra picture and everything being all jumbled up. I have no idea why all that happened.

I think that would look cool and it wouldn't be that bad if ya take the steering wheel off.

Shelly

It took me about 8-10hrs over a couple of days. I know it wouldn't take near that long if I'd taken it off. But I didn't want to mess with the airbag.

That looks great. Would be a killer mod if it was all the way round the wheel.

I wonder how is it to drive with that steering wheel now. You can't let the steering wheel slide in your palm when it adjust itself I am sure.

Cool idea, I won't be showing my wife this, don't think that I want it showing up on the honey-do list. Good work!

Very nice, indeed. And I'm sure it was a real pain to do while sitting in the car.

Some of our local rich folks would probably pay a lot to have that done to their Porsches and Maseratis. If ya get here before all their money disappears. ;)

Yeah, I think all of us have done projects we'll never try again -- mine was a large, tooled tote bag. I calculated the number of times I struck a stamp, and I think it ended up being around 22,000 times. :surrender:

I'm sticking with small projects from now on!

BTW, nice work on that braiding... Bet that steering wheel feels nice!

Regards, -Alex

that looks awesome!!! how many strands is it?

been thinking about doing mine...only i was gonna do it as a braid over core cause my steering wheel is worn all the way around....then use the shelac on it like the aussie whipbraiders do, to seal it good.

I want to Thank everyone for their comments. I'm glad everybody liked it. It feels great to drive with and it really doesn't affect how the steering wheel free turns ya just have to open your hand a little more.

I used eight strands that were nine feet by a 1/8inch wide. That knot has eight bights with a gaucho interweave. So I'm not real sure how many strands that would be. Maybe someone out there knows.

I have troubles figuring out how many strands those knots are to. If I am right, and there is a good chance I'm not, 8 bight equals 16 strand and with the interweave it would raise it to 24 strands. I think.... Anyone have a better answer?

I've been thinking on this and I think it may be 32. Ya make your sprial going down(8)then ya make your bights and come up over/under(8)and then make your bights and come down building pairs(8)and then ya come from both ends splitting pairs(8)which equals 32 I think? I may be as wrong as the is long but thats my take on it. Let me know if I'm wrong.
