venator Report post Posted November 10, 2014 Hey folks, I was looking to make a valet tray similar to this: http://www.aogifts.com/media/products/original/rumors-online_2231_41044899.jpg If I were to use vegetan leather I could tool the smooth outside and dye/antique etc. For the inside do I need to purchase suede and stitch it in or is it possible to do something to the back side of the vegetan to make it a nice suede? Sand and brush etc. Also how should I dye the suede? Sorry for rookie questions, I appreciate all the help. Stuart
krappstein Report post Posted November 11, 2014 That looks more like felt to me, but anyway... if the flesh side is nice and even you can stroke it with fine sandpaper, always in the same direction, to get a suede-like finish. This one I think was 320 or 400 grit sandpaper wrapped around a sanding stick and backed with a scrap of suede, although a small piece of EVA foam would also work. As for dyeing, I really don't know. And as usual, try it out first on a scrap.
LNLeather Report post Posted November 11, 2014 If you want to make your Valet Tray look like the picture... I don't know if you noticed, but the snaps that hold the corners together are installed in the lining and so they do not show on the exterior of the tray leather. It looks to me like it would be easier to use suede, install your snaps and glue the lining to the leather. Stitch the top line, snap the corners and there you are... Also easier - Suede comes in different colors and you can get it for 3.79 to 5.00 per square ft. Hmmmm, might make a nice Christmas present...
