Madkrafter Report post Posted November 17, 2014 I was visiting family and saw my brother had a Coach leather iPad case. Being a Madkrafter, I looked at it and thought "I can make that!" My inspiration solidified as I researched and found YouTube videos by Ian Atkinson. As soon as I saw his version of a multitool case I found my first project! This is my second version that I just finished. I built my first as my first leather project several months ago. It has gotten beaten up as I work maintenance on a 400 acre sports training facility. Multitools, flashlights and keys are necessary tools of the trade. One of my coworkers got sick of her nylon sheath sliding around her belt and asked me to make one for her too. The sheath is 4-5 oz leather. The keyring portion and is doubled-up 2-3 oz. It is finished with Fiebing's Light Brown Oil dye and sprayed with Acrylic Resolene. I grabbed it back from my coworker this morning (before it got beat up like mine) to take some pictures outside as the sun broke over the mountain. I made the keyring and flashlight parts detachable (in case I screwed them up!)
krappstein Report post Posted November 17, 2014 Awesome. Love the detachable flashlight holder. That keyring would make a great lanyard attachment in a pinch.

snubbyfan Report post Posted November 17, 2014 Second leather project? I'm lookin' forward to the third. That's very nice. I used to be a maintenance tech. at the Rubbermaid factory in Winchester and I'm familiar with how things get beat up.

Madkrafter Report post Posted November 19, 2014 Thanks everybody! As the saying goes (proper english aside): "I just can't not make stuff" I just can't think of what to do next! Anything bigger than a sheath seems HUGE. Monica, your bags are beautiful and I see your husband and I have lutherie in common! ( http://www.kappsguitarcompany.com ) Just another hobby that costs me money and makes me none A radio DJ friend from L.A. asked me about an iPad style case. That may be what I tackle next?? Sona Report post Posted November 19, 2014 (edited) Your second one... wow. I am looking forward to a project you might present in a year. Great job!And about those cost intense hobbies.... sadly I know what you mean. As I see in your interests, we got some in common (furniture making - I am a cabinet maker, leatherwork - check, same here, photography - same...) But luckily I get some money I spent for leathertools back by selling custom stuff... not that much, but it helps ^^. Keep up the good work! MonicaJacobson Report post Posted November 19, 2014 Thanks, Tim - I love that spalted myrtlewood electric guitar. Very nice! (My husband thinks it's nice, too) My husband was into photography as well, which is why I inherited a decent camera. It's great when your spouse spends money on the right things, right? What's really great is when you get something going long enough that you can break even, or even make a profit on your hobby. I'm sorry to see you're not building at the moment. Shop space can be hard to find. At least leatherworking isn't as long term as making an instrument, so that's nice. You get a return faster, and can keep your expenses down, if you can start selling. Good luck on the ipad case. You'll probably find it easier than making a multi-tool case.
