billybopp Report post Posted March 27, 2015 Spell checkers can certainly have problems of their own. Many years ago, I was consulting with a civil engineering firm, and heard this story from some of their people. They were preparing a bid for some work on a large bridge, and turned the typing of the formal proposal over to a temp secretary. The last thing that she did was to run a spell check before sending the proposal out. Well, that nearly resulted in a sexual harassment suit by the government agency taking those proposals. It seems that the spell checker felt that "Underwater Inspection" should really be "Underwear Inspection", and changed every single instance. Yup. Spell checkers are interesting. Wicked Welts Report post Posted March 27, 2015 hah, now that's funny! The weird thing on here is the checker runs automatically in the Private Message editor window but not in this regular forum editor window that I'm typoing in now. I've looked for a separate button in case it's not an automatice deal but don't see anything in either the 'quick reply' or 'full' editor versions. So like I said I'm either missing something (operatoir error is my specialty) or this is forum software specific rather than an issue with my browser etc. Right?? cgleathercraft Report post Posted March 27, 2015 My Mac does spell check darn near everywhere. Still, I keep an eye on it. More than once it has tried to make a simple paragraph a "colorful" one.
Wicked Welts Report post Posted March 27, 2015 Are you folks getting automatic spellcheck when you type in here? You know, when it puts the red squiggle line under the mispelled word(S)?
billybopp Report post Posted March 27, 2015 I do get spell check in LW.Net ( as a matter of fact, it does not like LW.Net ). Fortunately, I will not be typing anything about underwater inspections, and am therefor unlikely to offend anybody here. Bill.
Wicked Welts Report post Posted March 27, 2015 OK so check this out - it's working now?? I did a little experiment by opening a reply to thread window in one tab and in another tab I opened a Private Message entry window. So I start typing my usual jibbersih into the thread reply and no spell check, then I jump over to the Private Message and the spell check is working fine there. Then, leaving the PM window open, I switch back to the thread reply and the spell checker is working away! Now right here it's working, even after logging off and returning a few minutes later. So what does it mean? Was it an alien abduction? Secret Mod fix? My brain fix itself? TEST - I'm Mike, the officially unofficial Underwear Inspector for the LdubNet. OK, it's all good now. Carry on.......
Northmount Report post Posted March 28, 2015 Spell checker is part of your browser (or in some cases Operating System). Some browsers have add-ins or extensions that you can add. Tom
Wicked Welts Report post Posted March 28, 2015 (edited) Thanks Tom, I had no idea, I thought it was the forum software that ran the spell checker. So what could cause it to not work for so long and then just start working? I use Firefox with, I believe, all the updating setting at manual and last one being a browser update a few days ago which seemed to have no effect on the speller thingy. Oh, and any idea on when they're coming out with a grammar checker? I could really use on of thems. Edited March 28, 2015 by Wicked Welts
Northmount Report post Posted March 28, 2015 For Firefox, look at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-do-i-use-firefox-spell-checker. It used to be an add-in but is now part of FF. I've been using FF as my preferred browser for several years. Tom
Wicked Welts Report post Posted March 28, 2015 Tom, I just followed that FF link and fell into the wormhole! It looks like I had the right option checked for the spell checker so the only thing that kinda sorta makes sense is that it said it only works for text boxes that contain more than one line but I'm pretty sure these jumbo text boxes don't fall under that limit. That said, perhaps they mean for instances where i haven't typed more than one line? One thing I learned in there was that I could delete words that I accidentally added to my spell checker's dictionary and after looking in there I found a few words that needed to go. Thanks again Tom!
