Hand Stitching, 0.6 Or 0.8Mm For Small Things.

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I do mainly watch strap and I usually work with RIZLA 0.6mm thread, but as I am outside US I need to buy everything online and it takes 1 month to get here, plus, I must pay shipping and import taxes, so I was thinking about buying a few complete spools to avoid falling short, as I am now. So looking on ebay I've found a chinese seller that offers 20 spools for about US$40, problem is it is 0.8mm instead of 0.6.

Do you have any exemple of small work stitch with 0.8mm that you could show me or do you think 0.8 could make it on watch straps or is it too thick?

It appears that Amazon has some shipping to Chile, so you could try there. Here's a search to get you started: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_nr_p_85_0?fst=as%3Aoff&rh=n%3A2617941011%2Cn%3A12896081%2Cn%3A8090707011%2Cn%3A262593011%2Ck%3A0.6+mm+thread%2Cp_n_feature_keywords_two_browse-bin%3A7108330011%2Cp_n_feature_keywords_browse-bin%3A3363971011&sort=price-asc-rank&keywords=0.6+mm+thread&ie=UTF8&qid=1441780290

If it isn't already waxed, it may be easier/less expensive to wax it yourself than to source from elsewhere. Good luck!

.8 is too large for small items, in my opinion. Even .6 is too large sometimes, but .8 is way too big...I'd never use it, even on my heavy belts.

If you're making watch straps, 0.6 tiger thread at 9 spi is probably as big as you want to go for a traditional look. there are lots of great looking straps out there with larger threads and stitches - a more rugged and utilitarian look.

I am currently at 6 SPI, I wonder where to get a tool for 9spi.

I just had to make this connection myself (as in I didn't know this) but are you aware that .6mm Riza (Tiger thread) is NOT the same as .6mm machine thread? When I looked at conversion charts, .6 is equal to like 277. Now, I use 277 on thicker holsters and sheaths, but that's not the point, this is thick stuff. Riza thread is FLAT and at its widest point, .6 thread is .6 wide. but Its height is like .1 or .2, which is why it's ok for thinner leathers. Other threads (especially machine threads) marked as .6 are diameter, so they're quite substantial.

25b

Tried PM-ing you but couldn't.

Do you want me to send you some of the 0.4mm Ritza so you could give it a try and see if it's any use?

I just received this one from china:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/301196666744?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&var=600258965687&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

It is 0.8mm flat waxed thread. I don't plan to use it on watch straps but I share anyway as it is cheap and looks good.
