Trevor Baret Report post Posted July 23, 2016 To those who know how to restore sewing machines... I Mentioned in my other post here - http://leatherworker.net/forum/topic/71198-singer-leather-sewing-machines/ - that I have the Singer 31K18 (1937) and the 31K 48 (1945). These machines are essentially the same - wheel feed and roller foot, specifically designed for leather. There is a change in the mechanism which turns the wheel feed, and that is the only difference I can see. I want to take a few parts off the 18 to put them on the 48 purely for cosmetic purposes. The parts are the same and I just want to combine the machines to build the very best and nicest I can for my own use. The left over machine will still work perfectly (better than when I bought it) once I am finished and I will sell it on eBay. I am having trouble with one aspect of the deconstruction/reconstruction... OK - that was exaggeration - I am just swapping over a few parts, not pulling them apart completely. I am trying to remove the balance wheels to swap them over. I have removed two radial screws (balance wheel set screws - 448AL in image) and one large screw into the end of the shaft (arm shaft screw - 144D in image). My problem is that I still can't get the balance wheel off the arm shaft. Any suggestions? Trevor
RockyAussie Report post Posted July 23, 2016 Can you get a 3 prong puller over the middle of the 12358.Use leather or something to protect the paint. If so I"D use some WD 40 and leave overnight then try pulling next day when warmed up a bit.Mostly I think the grub screws would have burred up the shaft. Trevor Baret Report post Posted July 23, 2016 Hi Rocky, Thanks for the response. I suspect you are right about those screws. Sadly, I don't have a puller. I can certainly try the WD40 and warmth. And see if I can find someone who has a puller. Thanks for the suggestion. Trevor
graywolf Report post Posted July 23, 2016 You ought to be able to get that puller at any Auto Parts store.
Constabulary Report post Posted July 23, 2016 you can also carefully tap the wheel on different spots with a hammer and a piece of wood while turning the wheel. But a gear puller is for sure the better idea. When the wheel is off check the shaft for rust and burrs where the shaft has the notch and grind down them with some sand paper or a file. dikman Report post Posted July 24, 2016 Yep, wheel puller. I ended up buying one from one of the auto stores that had a sale. I got the small one which only just made it to the wheel rim!! As Constabulary suggested you could use a hammer and block of wood and slowly work your way around the rim, but the puller is a much safer bet. You could make one, but trust me it's worth buying one. Kezzau Report post Posted July 4 Hi. I am trying to find a roller foot for a 31K48 leather industrial vintage singer sewing machine. I can’t find anything online to tell me what to buy. Plenty of roller foots but nothing that says it’s compatible with a 48 model
