Members Constabulary Posted August 27, 2016 Members Report Posted August 27, 2016 Feet for this particular machine type are no longer available on the "free market" - maybe a LW member has a few for sale but I don´t know a dealer who has them in stock. Unless you like tinkering I would probably not buy this machine w/o knowing where to find at least the presser feet. You also need a needle clamp and probably want to replace the needle plate and most likely the feed dog. Does the machine have the shuttle hook? No matter what you pay for it be aware that you probably have to invest 100 - 150 GBP before it is working again and that does not include motor and table. Machine is from 1915 BTW so this really is a gamble. You cannot test it before you have all the parts and then you can try if it is sewing or not. In the current state I would not pay more than maybe 50GBP for it as it. 250 GPB is way over priced for a 100 years old machine in this condition I´d say. I don´t say that it will not sew but be careful. Members Matt S Posted August 27, 2016 Author Members Report Posted August 27, 2016 Constabulary and jimi I take your points concerning the age and unknown state of the machine. Yes I do like tinkering but I'm going to need this machine to work. As you say feed dogs and needle plates are really available. Reproduction needle clamps are available from China. The seller has some feet available for £30 each which is more reasonable but I wonder why he hasn't put one on this machine to increase its value. It has a shuttle and apparently the machine turns over without binding or sticking. Quote
Members jimi Posted August 27, 2016 Members Report Posted August 27, 2016 Exactly Matt, if you want to sell your machine being someone who works or sells sewing machines the first thing you do is to get it up and running to show people how it sews. if not maybe it is not worthwhile?? i bought one similar a while back and it was a bit more rusty looking, it had no shuttle or race and the tension spring was a botch up job. the needle bar is worn and wiggles but i put the parts from my other 45 in to test it and it sews! it is from 1894 and cost me €50 with transport included. so it was no big loss if it was totally gone. old machines are a risk, i personally like to risk it and take on a challenge - but at the right price?? Members Constabulary Posted August 28, 2016 Members Report Posted August 28, 2016 also be careful with the feed dogs - there are 45K flat bed and 45K cylinder bed machines and they do not use the same feed dog. You can find some 45K spare parts at College Sewing UK for reasonable prices: https://www.college-sewing.co.uk/?s=45k This is the feed dog you need. 91607 FEED SINGER 45K So when you are really interested in buying the mentioned 45K I probably have a needle bar clamp but have to look for it.
