raysouth Report post Posted August 26, 2016 Howdy All, As I sell out my estate, I realized that I have no idea how to go about shipping a couple of firearms that I have and thought someone here may have some experience with shipping and carriers to use. If you can set me off in the right direction, I would be very grateful as have never had to deal with a situation like this. God Bless. Ray
Ferg Report post Posted August 26, 2016 Ray, My son-in-law makes/sells wood grips for hand guns. He has told me in the past you need a license and whatever that includes to ship fire arms. Ferg
Troy I Report post Posted August 26, 2016 You use to be able to ship firearms through UPS as long as you were shipping to a licensed dealer or manufacturer...but I'm not sure if that has changed since 9-11 or not...the safest way would be to ask a dealer to ship the gun for you, but he will only be able to ship to another licensed dealer and then the customer will have to pick it up from them and fill out the proper paperwork. Hope this helps, Troy
JREESER1 Report post Posted August 26, 2016 Shipping a fire arm, "must be from a FFL(Federal Firearm License) licensee to a FFL licensee". Most licensed gun stores will fill out the paper work for a fee of $25-$40, plus you pay shipping and insurance and consignee pays receiving licensed dealer another fee of $25-$40 , plus Brady Background Fees around $7. The buyer must fill out and pass the Background Check, to take possession. This in addition to any local or state laws. This is part of the entire firearm debate. Lots of legal hoops on many levels. Just the facts---not an opinion. jr
raysouth Report post Posted August 27, 2016 I would like to say, "THANK YOU", to all of you for the assistance. Appears as though it might be quite an ordeal. May be best just to sell locally as would be much easier. Ferg, If I were to keep the sidearm, I bet your son-in-law could make a beautiful set of grips. Thanks again, and God Bless. bikermutt07 Report post Posted August 27, 2016 I haven't ever done it, but it doesn't seem too difficult. People sell them every day online. I would go down to my favorite gun store and just ask about the pricing and details. Usually, the purchaser already has the shipment information for their end. Dealer, FFL#, and shipping address for the dealership. Once you receive payment, you carry the firearm into your dealer and pay him his fee. Then he takes care of the rest. Or if you have friend to friend sales in Alabama, just sell it to your buddy.
MADMAX22 Report post Posted August 27, 2016 (edited) Ray you can atleast in my neck of the woods deal with FFL registered people that arent at a dealer. You should be able to look it up on line and find the ones in your area to contact. Or just go thru a gun dealer as mentioned. Around my area the dealers all charge $60-100 to do these transfers, meanwhile the individual guys with a FFL usually charge about $20-40. Its actually not all that bad if you get the FFLs setup on both shipping and receiving end. Try this site if you want to find ones in your area and at the other end. http://www.gunbroker.com/FFL/DealerNetwork.aspx They are trying/have done made it very difficult to even pass on firearms to your children and family. Atleast in most places. CA recently passed some even more stringent laws that require background checks to purchase ammunition. I really hope that doesnt spread although I am sure it will. leatherwytch Report post Posted August 27, 2016 I would say to check out gun shows in your area and sell them there. It would save you the headache.
