Hermann Oak backs supplier?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I'm looking for a supplier (other than direct from HO, as I can't afford their minimum), that carries Grade A HO backs WITHOUT the moss flesh. I have always purchased through Goliger as they seem to be the only supplier that sells true Grade A HO sides without a minimum, but they only carry the backs with the moss flesh.

Well, I guess I should back up a little and say that I have had no experience with their "moss" flesh, and have never seen it, it just doesn't sound like something I would be happy with.

With that said, is there someone out there that has purchased said leather with moss flesh, and would kindly post a picture, or at least describe, in detail, what exactly it looks/feels like? Is it like suede? One of the big reasons I like HO is how tight the grain is on the flesh side.

Thank you!

Dont know about the moss flesh part but do know that if you like going thru goliger call them and let them know what you want. Pretty sure they will hook you up with the standard back. Only thing is you may have to wait a little bit for there next order to come in.

Pretty sure they can send ya a swath of the mossed back to let you get a feel for it in person.

You're probably right. They have always been very courteous. I'll give them a call on Monday and see what they say.

Thanks,

Zayne

I do love there drum dyed skirting. It stamps real nice and burnishes real easy too. Made quite a few holsters with it.

I actually considered ordering a back from Wickett & Craig, its amazing they don't require a minimum, but I'd read that W&C leather isn't as firm/stiff as HO leather. Have you had any experience comparing the two? I really like the stiffness of Hermann Oak's leather and the tightness of the flesh side.

yes - i did compare

to me, it's a matter of choise.

I used HO from the beginning, and now, has shifted to WC. very kind and helpful personnel, no minimums.

WC sides a bit whiter . carves, tools and dyes well (as HO). didn't regret of shifting - especially when HO does want bulk orders, which tights the budget.

and you get #1 grade (WCs standard) directly from the tannery ;)

Do you mean "whiter" as in that it is lighter in color?

I've used both there a grade skirting and find them comparable. W/C drum dyed is beautiful.

WC and HO IMHO are pretty comparible in terms of firmness. They are both very nice. I think the firmness thing comes from the WC having a fluffier (not sure how to describe it) topside. Over all WC is as firm but the top of it is a little softer I would say, gives a slightly different look to the tooling. Its almost easier to get the nice rounded effect with WC.

HO is slightly darker and darkens easier with some oil and sunlight. Both darken nicely but HO is a tad better if your looking for that sort of thing. Ofcourse you can get the russet color from WC so you start out slightly darker yet it still dyes just as well. The natural WC is a lighter color which I think makes the dyes stand out better when using colors.

Overall either one is great leather.

I contacted W&C to see about getting a couple of swatches sent to me. So far it feels like I'll be ordering a back from them. I do actually like the idea of the W&C being lighter in color, I prefer my natural undyed/finished products to be lighter in color. I have noticed HO to be a little darker than I'd like.

I don't do any tooling or anything, but I guess the softer top would help with cutting out my designs.

Thanks for the input!

I don't think it will actually help with cutting as they both cut about the same, it is just a minor difference in the tooled work between the two. Regardless if you like the lighter leather you will be happy with the WC. Everything from them I have tried has been really nice as far as there standard line of leathers go. Plus you can order a top grade back one at a time, even there lower grades are nice hides atleast the ones I have gotten have been.

Awesome, can't wait to check out the swatches when I receive them.
