Help for FAV AV1 Skiving Machine

Recommended Posts

Just purchased a FAV AV1 skiving machine and trying to service it.

1) Does any one know whether this is normal for the feed roller and the cap covering it?

2) What oil and grease should be used?

3) How do I remove the bell knife to replace it? Manual indicates that there will be 4 screws but there's only one.

Hi There, this guy shows you how to change the knife and do all the settings, very good video. that is a deflector inside the bell and pulls out, you will see it on the video. i will be in your situation possibly next week. good luck and hope to see your progress.

oohps, sorry deflector is not in this one, must have been another video. will look for it.

i think your ejector will be just pushed in? there should be a thread in the middle of the ejector to screw a long rod in so as you can place it inside the bell knife, otherwise you risk cutting your hand!

Thanks Jimi. I only suspected that's what the rod (extractor) is for. I'll try it after the new bell knife arrives. I just reassembled the machine. Do let me know if you find the video on it. I would love to watch it.

Thanks for the video as well. That's the one I watched to disassemble the machine.

So far, it still skives but the feed roll seems to be coming in contact with metal cover, most probably due to the rubber gasket thing.

Any chance you would be able to advise on the other issues as well?

The machine looks in good condition and the grease cap etc all looks as normal. The cap says time for a little refill but as to the type I cant say as I have only ever used the same grease as I use on my vehicles. To be honest although mine get used a lot they have gone for more than a year or 2 without a check at times. The rubber dust cover should be replaced but they do seem to go for a lot of years in worse than that condition ok.  There is no way the feed wheel should be able to touch anything except the bell knife or the presser foot if it is lowered too far. If you are hearing a metallic scraping sound it is likely the cover on the right touching the bell a bit. The black knob that is attached at the front to it can be also rotated around to give more clearance from the bell.Try to adjust to a minimal clearance so as to not have leather wanting to get in between. If the bell is wearing out the ejector may be coming to far forward in the bell and need to be pushed back into the bell a bit deeper. Once the threaded rod is screwed in the ejector can be forced back and forth sometimes with a little tapping. The bell should be only a mm or so from the edge of your presser foot unless you are doing very heavy thick leathers. Hope this helps Brian

Thanks for your input Brian and also for the info on the distance between edge of presser foot and bell knife. I'll look out for what's causing the metallic scraping sound.
