Singer 42-7 info?

Just curious. Someone is advertising a Singer 42-7 and claims it can sew two layers of 12mm leather (which I find hard to believe). I can't find out much abut this model, other than

as a "harness stitcher"..so..maybe it can do two layers of 12mm ( would be two layers of 1/2"" each, total 1" ) ..sounds like harness thickness.

ps..just found a link to a PDF parts list for some of the 42 series..( the 42-7 isn't in there..but the 42-5 and the 42-8 are, and they are pretty beefy looking cylinder arm machines, with walking feet and what look to be thick capabilities ) ..

no way - it never can sew 24mm leather - check the needle system - if it could sew 24mm it should be at least 794 or longer like 1000 or 331 or similar. I would guess the advertiser just mistyped.

I have a 42-5, and even with its original long needles, it cannot sew much over 5/16" (20 ounces) of medium temper leather. These were upholstery machines, made in the 1920s.

The needle system made for the 42 series machine is long gone. Most owners have lowered their needle bar so they can use System 135x16 needles, which are about 1/8" shorter. This reduces the thickness you can sew to no more than 1/4 inch (16oz), if even that. The spring loaded follow foot system is not modern and has fixed links that are not variable like more modern systems.

If the 42-7 uses the same cylindrical bobbins as the 42-5, they are harder to find than hen's teeth and very expensive if you do find some.

Thanks guys. It does use the cylindrical bobbins, so that's one big negative if it doesn't come with extras, and 24 mm (1") of leather is putting it into the realms of the Cowboy 4500, and it definitely is not in that class! That info. I printed comes from a Singer publication relating to the 42 class.

Mike, that ismacs listing also says it is for "saddle stitching", whatever that means. I think the reason that the 42-7 isn't in that parts list is because it doesn't have alternating pressers so is different to those other models.The guy wants $400, and it's been listed for a while so I don't think it's going anywhere soon. Based on what Wiz has said unless it was virtually being given away I don't think I'll touch it.

Besides, I've just been spending quite a bit recently getting my bike (2005 Bonneville) up to scratch, plus I've just bought an 1866 lever-action rifle (lots of $$$!), so  I think maybe I'd better stop looking -  unless a machine pops up as too good to resist!!

I believe that Darren does (or did) have a large supply of new Chinese cylindrical bobbins for the Singer 42 class machines. That was in early 2017.
