Adler 30-10 shuttle play and timing

Hi all!

New to this forum, and leatherwork too, but it seems to be an amazing wealth of information! I've dove in headfirst and bought some equipment, namely an Adler 30-10.  I was aware of the price of spare parts before I bought it, but it didn't seem to be needing too many at the time of purchase (at least to a newbie), and the action felt tight, and turned smoothly. No play in the presser foot and needle went up and down smoothly as well. And seeing as how these never come up for sale in my neck of the woods I figured why not. I'm decently mechanically inclined so I figure I can handle most operations aside from machining new parts!

So after a thorough cleaning of the exterior and getting to know the various parts I have a few questions that hopefully you guys have answers to:

1. The only way to transport this thing was on its side. Probably not the greatest idea in hindsight but that's how we did it. About a tablespoon or two of a yellowish oil leaked out of the cover plate on the rear.  I'm not aware of a reservoir on this beast, so is it alarming to see this happen in such great quantity? When the time comes to lube it up again, what is the best stuff to use, and how liberally should it be applied?

2.  I haven't tried to sew yet, but just inspecting the action of the shuttle/carrier.  The carrier itself has play to it. Swings back and forth about 1/8" maybe 3/16".  Also the shuttle itself is a Singer replacement but it doesn't exactly fit too tight in the carrier.  Should I be concerned with this amount of slack? Is there any way to tighten the carrier up? Timing it will be a whole 'nother issue but is there anything to look for that signals "part replacement"? There isn't any visible grooving of the race/wear on the carrier. I suppose sewing with it is the only way to truly know?

3. Which Singer parts can be used to replace parts on a 30-10?

I'm sure I'll have many more questions as I get a few levels deeper into this, but these are the first.

There are some pockets in the machine that can hold oil, there are no oil reserves in it.The only Singers parts that interchange are shuttles, feet, maybe tension discs.
One thing you can check (tilted back so the gears don't fall out when you open it) Check for play in the gears & lube them while your underneath, there's also a short gear that connects to a long shafts that drives the shuttle (that you access from the back )that can work loose once in a while.The last thing is worn out gears.

Oh, if you ever take the plate of take some pics of the gears before you take them out & you'll save yourself hours of time.

So maybe just try sewing on it first before you start tearing into it & let us know what happens.

You can modify the Singer 29K bell crank lever to fit the 30-1.

Here is a picture of a 30 gear box. Good gears and gear racks have a flat top ( see picture). If the top of the teeth are sharp they are worn off. OEM Adler 30 parts are extremely expensive.

No, I know for sure they won't interchange on the -70 ,on the -1 I really don't know for sure, knowing Adler ?

afaik the BCL is the same on all Adler 30 (#30008) - the 29K BCL does not fit w/o modification but I once "implanted" one into a 30-1. 30-1 / 30-7 gears and racks are also the same - but shuttle carrier is different on the 7 / 70 sub class.

The -7 gears are larger than the -1 aren't they?Racks are the same.

Cheers guys! I will take a peek at the condition of the rack/gears when I get the chance.  Ideally I don't have to replace the shuttle drive. Does the flathead screw located under the shuttle tighten the drive gear? Or only hold the cover on from the top.

 The screw holds the drive gear onto the shuttle carrier in the old 30-1.  I think they make the drive gear pinned onto the shuttle carrier now so you can only buy the whole assembly.    This is so stupid since the only thing to wear out on them now is the teeth on the drive gear.   New, I think they are about $200.00 US.  Not cheap.

So, after removing the lower cover, I've determined that the source of all the slop in the shuttle carrier is in fact due to worn out gears and racks.  The racks not so much, but definitely the gear on the shuttle drive.  I would love to replace all toothed parts down there but I fear that would cost half the price of the machine...so I figure starting with the shuttle drive would cut down on a lot of play.

Does anyone have a reputable dealer they recommend for Adler 30 parts? I've found a place called "armastore.eu" that carries everything. Another place is "altenaehmaschine.de". This place has a very limited selection but might have the shuttle driver for a comparably reasonable price - only thing is they have a different parts numbering scheme (#1300-19).

Can anyone recommend a place to purchase this part, or share their experiences with either of these stores?  I've searched this site and cannot find any links to dealers.
