Singer 111w 155 cutting thread in first few stitches

Hi guys and gals,  need some help.  Been using my 111w 155 for a while and she's been doing great!  I just got into some 5 layers of denim and shes cutting my needle thread in just 1 or two stitches.  Any thoughts?

Could it be the needle?  Works ok through a couple layers of vinyl.  Maybe the thread I think it's v90.

are you using round point or leather needles for denim?

Not sure.  Package says 135x17 DPx17 Groz -Beckert  They came with machine.

They seam to be sharp when I stab them into my finger.

Here's a few things to check #1 check the needlebar thread guide,take a short piece of thread put it through the needlebar thread guide & pull it back & forth & see if it gets cut or shreds,also how does the hole in the feed dog look?Alot of times it can get chewed up from needles hitting it.Last check the bottom of the inside foot for a groove ,this can cut thread too.Last thing when you loosen the needle when you change it does it have much play left to right when you tighten it?There more but start with this.

135x17 is a non-leather point, cloth and vinyl sewing needle.

Thank you Sir!  I will give that a look.  The last thing I sewed was a box cushion and I did smack the feed dog a few times trying to make too tight of a curve.

The original needle that come with machine got broke...but not after a lot of abuse from a novice like myself.  I found these needles in the drawer with a bunch of stuff.  I have broke two since with a lot less abuse.  I'm wondering if there could be a quality issue with these needles.

This gives me the impression that you don't change the needle often, which might part of the problem - needles are disposable parts, and when I'm running into problems, re-threading and installing a fresh needle usually clears up a lot of issues.

You are probably right.  I have had this machine about three years and have about 6 hours of sewing time on it.

I will back up what CowboyBob says and check the hole of the feed dog.  Mine was a combination of the feed dog hole being a bit too small for the thread and needle I was pushing through it (#138 bonded polyester).  Luckily my machine came with a few sizes and so I changed out to a bigger hole on the feed dog.  Also, I noticed that my hook wasn't as close to the needle as it should have been and actually pierced the thread as it tried to hook it.  That was causing breaks and also binding on my hook.  Re-timed the needle and hook and changed the feed dog and have been running good since (Thanks to Uwe's videos for timing, huge help).
