241-12 oil bath oil

Recommended Posts

I did a search on "oil" and received nothing.

I am going to pick up a 241- something tomorrow. If the oil looks dirty what do I buy, and where is the best place to get it??

Should I replace the filter when I change the oil too, like my car?

Thnx

I'm also wondering what oil to buy. I went to the store, didn't see anything that I could recognize as industrial sewing machine oil. Can someone kindly recommend a brand name and type that I can find? Thank you!

@Sledzep01 Kinda sounds like you are asking about a sewing machine, so moved your post to leather sewing machines.

Most dealers will have Lily White sewing machine oil available.  Oil needs to be free of additives that will degrade to varnish and jam up the machine some day.  Also don't want coloured oils that will leave colour stains on your work pieces.

Oil in your tank should be clean (clear), no water rolling around in the bottom, no junk/fuzz in the bottom.  Good idea to change the filter if the machine has been operating in a dirty environment and has junk in the oil.

Sweet, thanks! I pretty much figured it out, so I have a quart of Lily White coming today. The machine is all set to fill and try to run. It was converted to 110 many years ago so I just capped and wrapped all the connections. Everything works, even the light. The only thing it doesn't have is needles and the oil gasket, but last time my dad ran it, about 20 years ago, he ran it without a gasket and it never leaked or spattered. And it still sits flush/closed. I do have needles and a gasket ordered that will arrive this week.

New question: Do you recommend waiting until the gasket arrives, or do you think it will be ok to try to run a few minutes today without it? I don't want to ruin anything at the 11th hour. I'm super excited to add this to the mix along with my Brother machine, which looks like a toy comparatively, and my big ol' Juki.

Go through and oil all moving parts before running it.  From what I understand from other posts here, the machine needs to run at high speed every so often to get the pump to pump oil up to all the spots that it is supposed to lubricate.  Most of these type were built for production facilities and the operators ran them at full speed.  Running slow doesn't pump the oil up (depending exactly on what machine you have which I don't know enough about).

If the gasket was no problem before, and didn't leak all over, then it should be okay.  It won't hurt the machine.

Good luck

Thank you once again. I'll be sure to get everything oiled up before I run it.

I oiled up everything and ran it at high speed a few times. It's great!

New question- I finally received the gasket yesterday. The head doesn't quite sit right now with the gasket in there and I'm afraid it's just tilted too much. Do you know if I should make modifications to the gasket or not? Or just go back to not using it at all? Hmmmmm.

Depending on what the gasket is made from*, it will squash down, to a greater or lesser degree, over time..Eventually the machine will be sitting flat(ish) again, all machines with gaskets tend to sit a few millimetres higher at the front than than do at the back ( hinge side ) ..If it isn't leaking, and is running OK, then it isn't critical.

* They are not all made from the same materials, even for the same machines.
