Members Mocivnik Posted February 5, 2018 Members Report Posted February 5, 2018 I'd like to buy a proper punch tool to make holes into leather belt for the tongue of the belt buckle. I've found the worst possible (and it's total waste of money) on ebay, so I'd like to buy some real ones. The dimensions should be around 6 x 25mm or a bit smaller. Just somewhere around here would be fine. Does anyone sells? Since I'm a beginner, I will be satisfied with used tools.
Members Mocivnik Posted February 12, 2018 Author Members Report Posted February 12, 2018 Bump! Searching for 1" punch tool as shown on picture up: 25 x 5mm, doesn't matter. Also searching for Belt end punch tool, for 40mm leather belts, as shown below:
Members Mattsbagger Posted February 16, 2018 Members Report Posted February 16, 2018 Check out Bob Douglas Tools. He sells vintage tool. Sharp and ready to go. He also is a nice guy and will talk to you about what will work best for you.
Members Matt S Posted February 16, 2018 Members Report Posted February 16, 2018 Abbey Saddlery has a range of crew punches in various qualities. English size 39 is 25mm.
Members Mocivnik Posted February 19, 2018 Author Members Report Posted February 19, 2018 Thank you both for informations! But asking for price/performance in both cases( Douglas and Abbey) versus Osbourne. Are they waaay better (since they are also way over 50$ each)?
480volt Posted February 19, 2018 Report Posted February 19, 2018 Try Bruce Johnson. He has inventory that is not listed on his site. I believe Bob Douglas has sold his old tool inventory to Bo Hargrave in Texas. If you buy new Osborne tools, expect them to be dull right out of the box, and have little attention paid to surface finish. About a year ago, I ordered a half-dozen new Osborne #147 punches through a local dealer, just to see what would show up. Tools arrived as I described above, plus they were shipped loose in a cardboard box, no attempt at packaging. They all needed sharpening anyway, so maybe it didn’t make any difference in the end.
480volt Posted February 19, 2018 Report Posted February 19, 2018 I guess I should have checked your location before replying. While dealing with suppliers in the US is possible, I’m sure it puts a premium on cost. I really don’t know who in the EU performs the same service as Bruce Johnson, acquiring old high quality tools, refinishing, sharpening and reselling at what I consider very reasonable prices.
Contributing Member fredk Posted February 19, 2018 Contributing Member Report Posted February 19, 2018 Check out LePrevo in England Slot Punch T129 http://www.leprevo.co.uk/hole-punches.htm http://www.leprevo.co.uk/photos/slot-punch.html I use them and they are good They also do the belt end punches T130 http://www.leprevo.co.uk/knives.htm
Members Mocivnik Posted February 19, 2018 Author Members Report Posted February 19, 2018 @480volt: Thanks for all the info, but I've contacted in a supplier in the EU as @fredk adviced. ps: What's with that banner of a steel wick in your signature? @fredk: Thanks for the info, I've written an email to the leprevo and hope for a quick answer about shipping. PS: Since I live in Europe, we have metric system and leather belts made here are standard dimensions 40mm (1.575"), but end strap punches are availible only in sizes such as 1.5" and 1.75". Does 1.75" suits better for this kinda work?

I like old tools and machinery, particularly things that stay usable for decades (or more). That is the “rode hard and put away wet” Koenig PTO winch on the front of my 1970 Dodge 4wd truck, the way it was when I acquired it.
Members Mocivnik Posted February 19, 2018 Author Members Report Posted February 19, 2018 @480volt: Outstanding, but it's really ruining the structure of the forum. Maybe should resize it to smaller? It would fit way better into the posts

Contributing Member fredk Posted February 19, 2018 Contributing Member Report Posted February 19, 2018 (edited) I get a picture of a roll of steel cable. The picture is approx 4 to 5 times the size of your actual message block in the above post. I use a lap top with a 15 inch screen. The height of the screen is 7.5 inches and the picture is larger than this [using my Firefox browser at 100%] Edited February 19, 2018 by fredk

It just needs careful alignment to get the V even on both sides
480volt Posted February 19, 2018 Report Posted February 19, 2018 Interesting. I’ll have to log in with a different browser and see what there is to see. With safari on an I-phone, all is well.

Contributing Member fredk Posted February 21, 2018 Contributing Member Report Posted February 21, 2018 I don't own any Osborne but I think their tools are better than most Craftool
Members Mocivnik Posted February 21, 2018 Author Members Report Posted February 21, 2018 Oh, I thought same. They are super friendly and polite, they take order kinda personally. I really like them.

bermudahwin Posted February 24, 2018 Report Posted February 24, 2018 It's faint, next to the top right of the big picture. If you tap it you can deselect one signature or all signatures, H

You will have to log in as a different user as your signature line is not normally displayed to yourself (that might be inconsistent as I can see mine, but it is just text). I had set my profile to ignore your signature line due to its size quite some time ago. I re-enabled it just a few moments ago and don't see your signature line on your posts, so either the server is ignoring my change, or you have dropped your signature line while trying to sort it out. Below that faint line on the right is an "X" (faint). Mouse over it and it turns dark and a "tip" appears saying "Ignore signature preferences" and you make your selection. You can also go to your profile and chose who and what to ignore from there. Tom
