Byoung Report post Posted July 1, 2007 Ok So I have started my carpenter’s bags and I have to say what I have done so far looks good to me, and I am having fun doing it, I might even see about doing a few of these on the side if I can make any money at it. But now for my question I am using waxed linen and my knots don’t seem to hold that well. I have been back stitching then tying a square knot but it is not hold tight. So if you gals and guys could tell me what I am doing wrong it would be of great help. Thanks Bert Pics to follow soon
Don101 Report post Posted July 1, 2007 normaly you dont need to tigh a knot if you back stitch 3-4 holes and just trim of the thread it should hold, what are you using 1 thread and two needles hand stitch if so it should be fine

whinewine Report post Posted July 1, 2007 i think it sometimes has a lot to do with the threads used. on stuff that i've found that comes apart, a drop of superglue tends to hold it in place

ETW Grumpy Report post Posted August 3, 2007 I use waxed Irish linen and back stitch 3 holes, cut the thread close to the project, then hit it with a lighter for a second to melt the wax and kind of seal it in place.

Pip Report post Posted September 15, 2007 Thanks guys I will know for next time, I just found knots do spoil the look of a project. i need to dye and finish then I will post, if you'll forgive the tatty first 10 stitches I ever did, which are pretty bad! Michael Sheldon Report post Posted September 15, 2007 I backstitch a few, cut flush, that's it. I've never had a free end pull loose.

yaklady Report post Posted September 16, 2007 When you back up the last three stitches, you can add a knot to the stitch itself to stregthen it. Pull both needles through the hole, and loop one or both needles around the thread before pulling it tight. Some people stitch the whole project doing this. I don't feel it's necessary. esantoro Report post Posted September 17, 2007 I've tried melting the ends but I'm always worried that I might weaken the surrounding stitches, so I've been cutting flush and using a tiny bit of super glue. ed +
