blafleur Report post Posted July 23, 2018 Anyone know anything about the Consew 310? Found one locally that looks to be in good shape and was very cheap, so took a chance and got it, figuring that being an industrial machine, it has a good chance of doing leather. But I can't find anything about it, no owners manual available, even from Consew. I don't know how to sew yet, but if this one would work for 8-10 oz leather, I'd like to start stitching my belts and straps with it. Thanks, Bryan
CowboyBob Report post Posted July 23, 2018 Could it be 210?
blafleur Report post Posted July 23, 2018 Definitely a 310. But I did find an owner's manual for the 210. I wonder how close they are.
CowboyBob Report post Posted July 23, 2018 (edited) Yes,I found a 310 parts manual & it looks very similar to your model. Edited July 23, 2018 by CowboyBob
Uwe Report post Posted July 23, 2018 The Consew 310 looks to be a bottom+needle feed design, based on the Consew 310 parts diagram. Not a bad starting point for leather work. Finding parts and service information for this oddball machine may be hard. The fact that the parts book doesn't even tell you what needle system to use is not encouraging. Hopefully the machine came with a pack of needles or a sticker that indicates the needle system. Since you already have the machine, the best way to find out if it will sew 8-10 oz leather is to just try it out. Get some leather point needles of whatever mystery needle system this machine uses and experiment.
blafleur Report post Posted July 23, 2018 It did not come with needles. Is there a way to tell by looking at the needle holder? On the Consew parts list, it lists needle as part number 2110102-194 but I can't find any reference to that. Mystery machine is right.
dikman Report post Posted July 23, 2018 I guess a good place to start is with the 210 needle size (Needle style 16 x 257)? Put one in, turn by hand and see what the timing looks like.
brmax Report post Posted July 23, 2018 (edited) I believe that needle number is 2110402-194 in your parts book Over on thread exchange their showing some Groz Beckert needles for the 310 as these: DBX1- and or 1738A. Showing a few different for thread sizes. Good day Floyd Edited July 23, 2018 by brmax
CowboyBob Report post Posted July 23, 2018 Most needlefeeds take a larger shank then the 16x257,the same length is 135x5 or for leather 135x8.
Uwe Report post Posted July 24, 2018 This may be an uphill and loosing battle. Remote crowd sourced support, being new to sewing, dealing with a mystery machine that has experts guessing at the most basic information is not an ideal combination. I predict lots of frustration all around. Post some detailed photos (good luck figuring that out on this forum) of the machine including any markings or brand stamps you can find on it or on parts inside or under the machine. Your only real hope may be to find out who actually manufactured the machine and what the original model is. Consew doesn't manufacture machines, they only put their label on machines made by others (Seiko etc.) - and obfuscate documentation to render it nearly useless. If you can find out the original make and model, you have a chance. Otherwise, you may be better off starting with a different machine.
brmax Report post Posted July 24, 2018 (edited) Good points! In some needle study this evening waiting for paint to dry. I looked around some and there are for sure scattered needle number systems that world manufactures just couldnt or wouldnt agree to earlier standards with the same. Here is an interesting bit I found from a haystack. http://www.dotec.com.tw/product-detial.php?p_id=8 http://www.dotec.com.tw/product-detial.php?p_id=132 http://www.dotec.com.tw/product-detial.php?p_id=112 http://www.dotec.com.tw/product-detial.php?p_id=109 Floyd Edited July 24, 2018 by brmax
blafleur Report post Posted July 25, 2018 I emailed Groz, and got the same answer as Brmax, and comparing those suggestions to their needle suggestion chart for various uses, I don't see any leather recommended needle types listed under DBX1 or 1738A. Like Uwe astutely pointed out, this may be a fruitless uphill battle, though good sense isn't often used in my decision making. Needle type chart suggests D, DH, and LL type points, and none of these points seem to be a choice in these 2 needle systems. Am I missing something, or is that needle assessment correct? https://www.thethreadexchange.com/miva/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=NDL-DBx1 https://www.thethreadexchange.com/miva/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=NDL-1738 A
CowboyBob Report post Posted July 25, 2018 Look for 16x2 it's a small shank leather point needle the same length as a 16x257.
