twisted fringe

I've seen some chaps, and a bunch of chinks, with twisted fringe. I've never done it, and don't have a clue HOW TO do it.

Anybody want to share the secret? I'd sure like to know how to do that.

Twist it and spray it with water, set something heavy on it until it dries. If it doesn't hold the shape you want the first time, use more water and do it again. Some people refer to twisted fringe as "Cheyenne fringe".

JOHANNA IS RIGHT ON IT.. BUT NOT TOO MUCH WATER, I USE A SPRAY BOTTLE

AND JUST GET THE FRINGE DAMP.

I lay my chinks on a sheet of plywood carefully tack them down making sure to put the laces tacks in a few stitch holes, just enough to hold the body in place. I spray the fringe and then twist them and place a lace tack in the tip of each one. I let it set for a couple of days and then trim the fringe off right next to the lace tack. Its a lot of extra work but I get a really tight twist which I like the looks of. Greg

Another method is to dampen a few of the fringe at a time, twist them, and hold them (usually 3 or 4 together) with one of those heavy duty metal paper clips. (drawing a blank at what those paper clips are actually called). This will leave a little flat mark on the end of the fringe, but like Greg does, just cut it off close to that.

Those paper clips are great to hold the gusset in place on saddle bags after you glue and during sewing.

Greg--the tacks you mention--are they the ones with the plastic heads on them? The type folks use on maps?

M.J.--I know exactly which clips you're talking about, but I can't remember what they're called either. I want to say "binder clips," and they come in several different sizes.

Binder clips, bulldog clips or Acco clips.

bruce; No they are not ,I use a 3oz. lace or shoe tack (they are a tiny nail) and throw them away after words. Greg

hmmm.......twisted fringe......sounds like the name of a rock group. Or, Hillary Clinton's voter base.

I wouldn't have thought chap leather would hold a shape. I never can get it to absorb much water either. Who'd a thunk it? And all this time I thought you guys were puttin' some fancy braid on all that fringe.
