Members charley Posted July 19, 2007 Members Report Posted July 19, 2007 This is my first post-of-work to leatherworker.net. ;-) Here's a snake I recently completed -- It's a very small part of a much larger project where it will be combined with works from many other carvers. Thus, the edges aren't finished -- it will be cut down to about 1/4" around the image when assembled into the final project. This is "Rhinocheilus lecontei", or "Western Longnose Snake", native to Colorado, Texas, and other parts in the Western USA. My wife is so phobic, she wouldn't even look at it <sigh>. My kids thought it was "cool", though. ;-)) It was my first project with Bob Beard's "scale" tools ... I need more practice with them, but they were pretty easy to use. (I can tell that you need to figure out a technique to use them, though, because they have a nice *deep* undercut.) This piece is about 7" high by 9" wide, embossed slightly out from the back, colored with Tandy Cova dyes (very watered-down), then Tandy High-Liter, and finished with Tandy Satin Sheen. --charley Quote
Moderator Johanna Posted July 19, 2007 Moderator Report Posted July 19, 2007 Charley, I've been looking at leather for many years, and that snake is one of the neatest things I've ever seen. You're about to get peppered with questions and praise, and you deserve it! Thanks for sharing, charley. That really is cool, and I love the coloring and detail. Wow. Does she even let it in the house ? So how long did that take to carve and then to dye ?? Very freakin cool and i give it 3 thumbs up. Quote It takes more then one freak to have a true freakshow. So take a seat , the show is about to start. Check out the freakSHOW
Contributing Member ClayB Posted July 19, 2007 Contributing Member Report Posted July 19, 2007 Hi Charley, I'm really glad you decided to post the pictures of your snake here. You already know that I like it (or I wouldn't have tried to get you to post it here) I cant wait to see what this project looks like when it is all finished. Hope you decide to post more pictures of your work. I have only seen a couple of your projects, but I like the ones I have seen a lot. Your coloring job is really impressive! Members CitizenKate Posted July 22, 2007 Members Report Posted July 22, 2007 Charley, That is a very realistic looking snake. Between the scale texture and the dye job, it really pops out and has a very natural appearance. Nice work! Kate Quote
Members mulefool Posted July 24, 2007 Members Report Posted July 24, 2007 Pretty Darn cool. So can you post a pic of the completed project. How is it going to be used with work from other carvers? Quote www.horseandmulegear.com
