heating tandy alphabet/cartoon stamps?

Recommended Posts

any body tried heating tandy's stamps to make a mark on chromed leather ?

heat source would probably be a dremel versatip ( i am not intending to attach the stamp to the versatip, which i believe is too hot for leather use, but rather to heat it like you would a creaser..). i am reluctant to try it out as it ain't easy or cheap for me to get tandy stamping stuff, and I am unsure if the heat will affect the stamp material (zinc or some alloy?)..

if someone has tried it out, please let me know..

I've warmed them a little with a heat gun (to about 70 degrees C for veg tan) and not noticed any ill effects on the stamp. If I get a chance I'll try one out at a temperature suitable for chrome tan and get back to you.

My big concern is using a gas torch to heat the stamp, even a little one like that. Not so much the overall heat energy but how localised it is with the zinc alloy that they seem to use. I've heard of Ivan screw creases melting when put in a flame. Do you have a hot-air gun? That might provide less focused heat.

Thank you for the info about Ivan stamps. I got a bunch recently and I probably would have tried something odd if you hadn’t warned me.

A heat gun works nice on craftool stamps on veg and chrome tan. A press of some kind also works best. Use welding gloves it don’t take much to get them HOT. Lol Practice on some scrap for best heat time and pressure works best for you. Even a simple c clamp will work.
