Woldbill1962 Report post Posted August 19, 2019 New to the forum and to leather craft. Have been doing relief carvings and checkering on gunstocks for about 35 years. That's getting to be a dying art, so figured I would try my hand at leather work. Seems like alot of the detail that went into my relief carving will transpose into the leather work, just different tools. Going to Tandy this weekend and look at tools and starter kits. I know I will be needing or wanting to upgrade to better tools in the future. Heck, most of my carving tools I made myself. Looking forward to reading all of the great info and picking your brains for advice and wisdom. Have a great day Bill
Matt S Report post Posted August 19, 2019 How do Bill! I'd love to see some of your chequering work. There are similar techniques that are/were used to decorate leather, especially keeper loops and box keepers on fancy harness. Not seen much today but was popular 100+ years ago. I expect that you'll find a lot of your skills transfer.

bikermutt07 Report post Posted August 21, 2019 Welcome aboard. I live in Shreveport now, but hail from the Great Republic. I grew up in Ellis county. I've lived in both Ft Worth and Houston, then found the only woman worth leaving Texas for.
dougfergy Report post Posted August 21, 2019 Welcome aboard! I'm looking forward to seeing some of your wood work and your leather work. Knives are a lot of fun and my hobby as well, but not the forging part. Just never had the resources for that, but I buy the blanks and work them up, build sheaths and such. Very therapeutic for us old farts, kind of like basket weaving at the asylum!
