Shuttle problem with Cowboy 3200

Recommended Posts

Hello

Lately I have to sew by hand because my machine have a rare problem I haven't find solution yet. When the he hook shuttle moves forward hits the point indicated in the photograph attached and the machine gets stuck. It happens sice I sewed a too high piece of leather and force it a bit in order to finish it. I fear needing professional help because here in Spain there are very few people with this type of machines.

I'm certainly NOT the guy to ask for sewing machine help, but it may help to let people know WHAT is "hitting".  Is the shuttle hitting the NEEDLE, or is it hitting something ELSE?  Or is it the THREAD "getting stuck"?

Hello JLSleather: the hook shuttle, that part that moves free inside the arm of the machine and carries the thread bobbin, is what hits the point indicated in the photo...

Strange, seems like those two parts should be moving TOGETHER.  Maybe upload a video the same view as your pic.  I'm sure if I don't catch the issue somebody else would.

Have you pulled the entire assembly out, race and all. You might have some thread or an accumulation of leather dust caught up behind it. Also, the shuttle moves with the piece yo have the arrow pointing at. The shuttle should have some play to jiggle around a little but it should not be enough to touch. When you grab the shuttle with your hand can you move to touch where the arrow is? How old is your machine?

Maybe try and take out the shuttle and see if there is anything in the race to obstruct then put a little oil there in the race and see if it is better? I think where your arrow is that is normal that it hits there depending on which way it is rocking, pushing the hook back will hit where the hook is like in your picture, then pushing the hook forward will hit where you have your arrow. you might have some thread stuck in the race??

Exactly what I was thinking.  OR.. since it doesn't happen when he cranks it without sewing... it may be that the top thread isn't taking the correct path to form the loop and is getting caught in there which - ODDLY, can happen if those two screws are too tight OR too loose.

Just to be certain again as Jeff asked..
What do you mean by "hits" and "hitting"..you mean "strikes something percussively" ? or "sticks / stops when it reaches that point" ?

Here it is. A video with the problem. You can see the machine getting stuck. when I push the shuttle with my finger the machine sew again and gets stuck again...

The race is clean and lubricated, there aren't any thread or leather dust inside

It seems that the shuttle have too much play to jiggle but I don't know why... Every part seems to be ok and when the error occurred for the first time the machine was working perfectly...

That definitely looks like the thread getting stuck forming the loop.  It was tough to see with that color thread and at that speed, but yeah --- your thread is getting trapped, not making it "quite" around.

Now, maybe one of the "techie" boys can help... looks like either your shuttle is reversing a bit EARLY (or the thread is coming up late) trapping the thread before the loop pulls up, or it may be wedging in between the race and the cover plate (those two screws do like they are excessively loose).

There should be some foreward/backward "slack" in that bobbin carrier, but not really in and out.

Here are some manuals for a Juki TSC-441. The CB3200 and its big brother the CB4500 are clones of the 441. While the 3200 has some differences in parts, the basics are the same. See if you can adjust the timing and lateral position of the shuttle and hook to get normal operation.

Carlos, I think you have the screws possibly in too tight?

@Wizcrafts I have been reading about timing from your post and I think that sincronization is the road to solve the problem like @JLSleather suggest me

Does it act like this when you have removed the complete shuttle race? You know what I mean - remove shuttle race and hook and check again. Just to see if it really is the shuttle race....

This video by @Uwe  has been very helpful to me and may be good here. Note that he has a few other relevant vids on his channel as well.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZT3AVgj_HLI

Okay, I'll be the broken record "dummy" .... before we get adjusting and turning screws and settings ... are we SURE we don't just have that cover plate cocked at an angle causing it to bind on the thread at 11 0'clock position?  Those screws look like they're backed out quite a bit.

Before you start turning any screws are you sure it's threaded correctly & do you hold on to the needle thread for the first 3-4 stitches? You also need to stop & start sewing the the thread take up lever(chrome piece with an eye you thread through) all the way @ the top of it's stroke.

Have you checked the timing of the needle and the Shuttle. I just looked at my Adler 105 and mine the timing seems different.

Bert.

PROBLEM SOLVED. First of all thank you all for your help again... The machine is perfectly thread and nothing is cocked... And now is alive again. In the attached photograph you can see the screw that was causing me a headache... That little -CENSORED- was really little bit loosened (I don't know the reason) and stood out from the shuttle (less than a milimeter), causing it to get stuck.

By the way: the Uwe's video about timing a Cowboy CB4500 and the PDF's of the Juki 441 aren't exactly valid for a CB3200 cause certain parts aren't the same, although I suppose they are good to guide in the process If you know the differences...
