Need some advice. My son in-law has a Pfaff 545 sitting a storage she'd collecting dust. I can have it but I have a couple of concerns, the main one being suitable for lighter weight leather.  The heaviest I will ever sew is 12oz, and that would be a lined belt. The majority of what I do is in the 8 to 10 oz range.  The other problem is the size of the table. It is mounted on a table 18" X 48", and I will have to figure that out my self. Just looking at it, looks like it belongs in a saddle shop.

Thanks for any help,

Terry

Since it is your son in law just go ahead and test the machine. This is a very comfortable buying situation! Pretty sure it will suit your needs. Download a manual - read it - test the machine. Pretty sure you will be please but as always - used machines may need some TLC / adjustment / oiling here and there especially when it was in storage for a long time.

BTW 10oz total thickness or multiple layers?

My Pfaff 545 H4 will sew about 20-24oz total of upholstery weight 2-3oz supple leather.  Look to see if it is an H3 or H4 model.  The H4 takes a longer 190 needle system, which can be an advantage with thick projects.  If it's an H4, you may find it useful to use a slightly bigger needle than recommended to avoid breaking the needle.  Longer needles are good, but can be prone to breaking if they're too thin.

I will have to check further. Thank you for the advice

Well, at least the price is right.:) Are you saying the table is too long at 48"? Easy fix, just cut the end(s) off, I've done that before.

Machines wot I have - Singer 51W59; Singer 331K4; Seiko STH-8BLD; Pfaff 335; CB4500.

Chinese shoe patcher; Singer 201K (old hand crank)
