Tom Katzke Report post Posted September 21, 2006 I have an absolute phobia of these guys, but thought someone somewhere might need a pic of one, and this one is certainly big enough! What a hansom creature. At least it is outside. Tom Katzke Central Oregon
pepin1948 Report post Posted September 22, 2006 I will say that as far as spiders go, it's very impressive looking; but yes I'm definitely glad it was outdoors...and it's still alive because of that fact!
Dragons Pearl Report post Posted September 12, 2007 I will say that as far as spiders go, it's very impressive looking; but yes I'm definitely glad it was outdoors...and it's still alive because of that fact! Aye, the only good spider in my house is a dead one. *shudder* Looks like a Hobo which are extremely poisonous. I will kill those even if I see them outside. Art Report post Posted September 12, 2007 (edited) A little big to be a hobo, they are not near the size of their Australian cousins. Hobos seldom get more than 1/2 inch and Holly lives in Pennsylvania whereas most Hobos are in the Northwest (US). She looks like our pretty common Wolf spider (Lycosidae, Genus Hogna, species probably helluo), they are sight hunters (Hobos are funnel webs) and pretty much decimate the local insect populations that they can get at. They can be quite big and scary but have excellent eyesight and don't want to have a lot to do with you, and like most, seldom bite unless provoked; bites can hurt but are seldom medically significant. You know, the more I look at that critter the more she looks like a grass spider, kind of wierd to see her out of a web though. Size seems a little large too, they are slightly poisonous but really fast and outside of a web (usually on the lawn) you would have a hard time swatting one. Like the Hobo, they are funnel web spiders. I daughter + one flip-flop = No Wolfs (or any spiders for that matter) in the house! As a kid, I was on the receiving end of a nasty bite buy a spider I could not identify, from then on I was in the "know thy enemy" camp and for the most part we mutually exist. Art Aye, the only good spider in my house is a dead one. *shudder*Looks like a Hobo which are extremely poisonous. I will kill those even if I see them outside. howardb Report post Posted November 18, 2007 Looks like the same ones I've been squishing all summer. We put in a doggie door and they think they can just 8-legged waltz right into the house!! Not on my watch... OK, I've also been known to scream like a girl when they catch me off guard... Definitely not a hobo. Wrong markings. Judging by the webs around my yard, I think they are funnel web weavers, but they are only going to be poisonous to other bugs. Brent
TexasJack Report post Posted November 25, 2007 Doesn't look very big to me. We had a very wet summer with lots of skeeters and the spiders thrived on them. Big webs that stretched 15 to 20 ft across. I saw an interview years ago with Vincent Price. He said that all horror movies have the heros (or victims) walking through cob webs because tests have shown that men hate walking through webs and showing that on-screen made the men in the audience jumpy. I do know that walking through one at night bugs me pretty bad! It is interesting how folks get all wired about big spiders - which are usually harmless - and don't worry at all about small ones like the brown recluse that can really tear you up. fishguy Report post Posted November 29, 2007 I believe that is a giant house spider, they eat hobo spiders and don't do humans any harm. So don't squish, it is your little eight-legged watch dog http://www.srv.net/~dkv/hobospider/compred.html
