Bestedreng Report post Posted April 14, 2020 Help me, please! I´ve been spending my day on trying getting my Adler 5-27 to work properly. It missed a stitch here and there, and I thought the hook-needle-timing might be off. Searching this fantastic forum, I (thought I) found the way to adjust it. Seems that the drive shaft was stuck and not able to adjust. have a look at the attatched picture! The red arrow points at the screw I loosened. Is the shaft supposed to rotate freely? It doesn´t. The blue arrows points at the screws I suppose are ment to adjust feed dog timing. Loosing them dont make any difference either. Am I wrong in my assumptions that the shafts are stuck? And, if so, how to get them loose? Sorry about my english. It is not my first language.
jimi Report post Posted April 14, 2020 Hello, I`am not familiar with your model of machine but comparing it to a Singer 45k it looks basically the same, i think both of these shafts do not fully rotate, one is for your shuttle and the other for the feed dog, and for adjusting the timing you just need to move the needle bar up or down which is accessed from under the front head plate. So if i was you i would tighten the screws up and put the small shaft back on again and try moving your needle bar up or down for the timing and see if that helps. If this has just happened and everything was stitching good before then it might be the needle size, thread size, or changing from thin to thick leather, These are just possibilities you might want to look at before taking any parts off of your machine. Bestedreng Report post Posted April 14, 2020 Thank´s for your reply! I have been fiddeling with the needle bar all day long. When it is low enough to make the hook time properly, it gets to far down, and the needle and thread starts to interact with other parts of the shuttle, which results in a thread loop forming in front of the needle. So I think I somehow will need to adjust the hook timing.
jimi Report post Posted April 14, 2020 Can you send a picture of your machines thread path.

jimi Report post Posted April 14, 2020 (edited) Seems like you are missing the first tension assembly?? Also your thread looks pretty thin?? Edited April 14, 2020 by jimi
Bestedreng Report post Posted April 14, 2020 The first tension assembly is there, but you cant see it from this angle. Its a 25 thread., 160 needle.
jimi Report post Posted April 14, 2020 Is this a new machine to you? or have you had it a while? I would say looking from the pictures that you need to go a little thicker with your thread for a 160 needle? T210, 207. Did you change anything and then it started to skip or have you been sewing with this setup and not having problems??
Bert51 Report post Posted April 14, 2020 (edited) Sorry I was on the wrong track. Edited April 14, 2020 by Bert51
Bestedreng Report post Posted April 15, 2020 It´s a new machine to me. Looks very similar to yours! I´ll try with a thicker thread. Do you think it needs a thicker needle to? When I got it, it was fitted with a 300.
Constabulary Report post Posted April 15, 2020 As Jimi said - to me it also looks like the top tension unit is missing. I only can see the thread loop but not the tension unit.
Bert51 Report post Posted April 15, 2020 (edited) That's what I started to say, but it looks like the angle of the photo is playing tricks, I can see a part of the top tensioner guide. My top tensioner was missing when I first got mine, it took a while to work out why it would not sew correctly. Bert. This is a photo i looked for and it is from here on leatherworker, i do not have this machine but one similar without the kick foot. was the 1st tension assembly moved for a specific reason??, I think it´s proper place is on the top left corner of the face plate?. And remember you have to go around the second tension pully 1 1/2 times.
Bestedreng Report post Posted April 15, 2020 I dont know why the 1st tension assembly is located differently, but it doesn´t seem to have been moved. Thank´s for all your efforts! I know got the machine to work properly. I got the stuck part moving with some heat and oil, and have now adjusted the hook to time with the needle a couple of millimeters earlier. It solved the problem with skipped stitches.
