RhoTu Report post Posted August 17, 2020 New to sewing so be kind. Had a Singer 29-4 patcher land in my lap. Been beat up and needs some work. Got it to stitch but the max stitch length is at 12spi. I've torn it apart and am cleaning and polishing all of the parts and noticed that the foot bar is bent so will try to straighten that and see if that helps get the stitch length closer to 6. The reel pin is gone and the previous owner put some jbweld in the hole but never re-drilled it (right before he spray painted the entire machine!). I have most metal machines so can make most whatever I need. I jnow that the original pins were just that but it seems that that was not necessarily a good design. I was thinking of tapping and then extend the pin to the point were I could use a jam nut on the bottom. Thoughts? Question, what diameter should the pin be? Is it a 1/4"? and how tall would you recommend. TIA RT
Wizcrafts Report post Posted August 17, 2020 You are going to have to replace the feed motion cam that moves the foot. It is inside the ring on the bottom of the revolving head. This is an involved process with several parts requiring removal, including the bolt on head holding the revolving bushing and needlebar.
RhoTu Report post Posted August 17, 2020 Thanks for taking time to reply. As I said I am new to this so terminology can be a stumbling block. From the parts list the Feed Motion Cam is 8660. Is that the cam? I inspected the cam and found no discernible difference in play when cranking and holding the feed motion ring slide bar throughout a full turn. I don't fully understand how stitch length is regulated on this machine. TIA RT

If you only getting 12 spi for your stitch adjustment like you said, then that is where you need to concentrate for starting to stretch them back out longer . https://leatherworker.net/forum/topic/87846-recondition-a-29-4-bell-crank-lever/ . RhoTu Report post Posted August 18, 2020 After straightening this foot bar and reassembling I am now getting 7 spi. Not sure how long it will last. Hopefully the bend was caused by something other than wear. Would still liketo know what the spool reel pin diameter and length are. RT
jimi Report post Posted August 18, 2020 Hi, The spool pin size is approx - 4mm x 65mm. Not sure if it is tapered at the bottom?? The stitch length is adjusted by the clamp on the foot bar, they normally have the numbers stamped on there to show the stitch length. If you look up "Singer 29k manual" in the search option above i am sure you will find a good copy of a manual and parts list to get you going.
