Morgan,

I'll echo the praise on a first saddle. It looks great. I appreciate you sharing your work and the open critiques. It helps us all learn and that's why I frequent this forum. Looking forward to seeing the second saddle.

Randy

Thanks very much Randy!

I'm sure impressed with your first saddle.  I am hoping to start my first saddle soon.  I have been studying the Stohlman encylopedias.

Where did you source your saddle tree?  Did you order the tree with your custom measurements or use a "stock" tree from the maker?

Thanks much,

Rich

Thanks Rich, this tree was the stock cliff wade from Bowdens, and I was reasonably happy with the tree. It did need leather built up and smoothed out over some of the rawhide lacing. I just bought two custom trees from Timberline in Utah, and at first glance they look like they'll need less cleanup. Have fun with your saddle!

How were the trees from Timberline "custom"?  I've bought four trees from Bowden made custom per Dennis Lane measurements, but Timberline doesn't make from DL measurements last time I bought one from them. My limited experience from both brands (5 saddles) is similar - the finish on the Timberline wade tree was much better than the seam finish on Boden trees, some of which I had to build out and smooth. However, the Bowden DL custom trees fit perfect.  John

John, I didn't order these new trees for a particular horse so I can't speak as to the custom fit, but I'd agree that the finish on the Timberline tree is much nicer than Bowdens.

I could be wrong but I don't think that Bowden or any other tree maker uses all of the Lane card data to make a completely unique tree.  Given all of the cards and the four positions you place them, the number of different combinations would be staggering.  From my discussions with tree makers, they know which of their bar shapes and width/angle combinations will work for the "body type" that the cards indicate.  They will all tell you building a tree for an individual horse is not a good idea but fitting a range of body types is what our goal should be.
