What Size Thread Do You Use For Hand Stitching?

Recommended Posts

I mean either with an awl or needle by hand(one or two needles). I suppose a person should have different size threads on hand. I have only one size now and its a real thin thread.

I mainly do Ukulele/Guitar straps and Belts and the odd case here and there, as a general all rounder I use 1mm thread when working at 6 to 7 stitches per inch.

For more delicate stuff using closer stitch spacing reduce the thread size accordingly.

Hope that helps..........

Cheers

Admittedly, . . . I do very little hand sewing, . . . but when I do, . . . I take my 346 thread off my machine and use it.

You can get it from a Tandy store, . . . it's really strong, . . . extremely versatile, . . . is coated with some kind of parrafin product which will keep the stitches tight.

I use it for wallets, holsters, gun cases, belts, dog collars, . . . the whole 9 yards.

May God bless,

Dwight

Hello! This is actually my first post, but I've been patrolling for awhile, so I wanted to help.. I was in this same situation about hand stitching and what size thread.. I started with the waxed and bonded stuff from Tandy, and a 4mm pricking iron but felt like it was too thick.. I went to threadexchange.com and read up.. and now I use a 2mm pricking iron with 207 bonded nylon thread. And then just hand wax it myself by running it through a cake a beeswax & parafin that I made myself. It works well, and it looks more modern/finished.. At least in my opinion..

Hope this helps!

Todd

I roll my threads from no12 linen yarn, or sometimes no8 yarn. I can make a thread of almost any thickness. You can roll your thin thread to make thicker ones.

At 6 Stitches per inch I like to use 0.8mm thread, 5 Stiches per inch and larger I use 1mm. (If you can find it the Tiger thread is amazing stuff)

I have used both thick and thin thread from tandy as it is waxed which saves me time as I hand stitch EVERYTHING I have done from wallets to belts to bags and even corsets. Thread size to me only matters on what project you are using. Like the corset that I have done I use 138 fine thread. But for other projects I have used thicker thread, I always use a saddle stitch for the main seams as I feel that is the strongest stitch there is. As a few people mentioned depends on how wide apart your holes are that really effects the size of thread you use.

Tiger thread ordered from Abbey England. 1.0mm for 90% of what I do. The other 10% = whatever looks good.

Hi, I'm new here (first post, yay!) and I'm looking for the thread you were talking about, where do you get yours from? I found some on etsy but the guy only sells samples.

Any help is much appreciated :notworthy:
