I have not been able to find the time to post here in ages. But this spring I made a headstall for someone and thought I'd share some pics. It's made of roo that I cut, skived and beveled. The knots have a foundation or casa of white horsehair and the interweave is the roo, cut down and skived finer. I cored the braids with a nice strong cord, "just in case". This was really a great project. I don't often have the opportunity to work this large. Also putting in a pic of it on the horse it was built for.

I've been messing with rawhide for awhile now and could use some advice. My dad has a saddle and boot shop in northern Utah and I've talked to him but the ol timers he knew that braided rawhide have passed. I have the Bruce Grant book and Gail Hought books but could use help. What should your strands feel like when they are ready to split, when they are ready to bevel, and when it's ready to braid? Any and all advice with cutting and braiding rawhide will be greatly appreciated. If anyone is close that is willing to teach please let me know. I don't want this dying trade/art to end.

I am looking for a place that I can purchase good rawhide. Tried the tandy stuff and that was a waste. Don't have time to make my own or have enough livestock loss to get hides. Thanks for looking and any insight.

Hi everyone. I have been braiding for several years now and I decided to take the plunge into a little bit of rawhide work. I want to make a bosal but I only know how to do roo and I couldn't find anyone to make a rawhide core. I bought some rawhide, managed to get it soft, I even managed to spilt a 1/2" piece with my hand held splitter. Whe I started citing it down into 1/8" inches it did not go so well, but I got a couple of 1/8" strands I could bevel. I went to bevel with 0 success. No beveled pieces oh well. Any advice would be appreciated. I knew rawhide wasn't easy but goodness....I had no idea, that is some tough stuff. I am thinking my whimpy roo tools wil…

I've just started dipping my toes into this, and have a project where I'm going to be braiding some kangaroo lace around a core. From what I've read I need braiding soap, which leads me to David Morgan's recipe of Ivory soap, water and lard. Trouble is, making up a batch of that is a problem for me, as well as it being probably a lot more than I need. Is there some off the shelf alternative I could use? Fiebing's Aussie Leather Conditioner was suggested to me as an option, but I also figured I should ask here given the amount of experience about.

I am making a dog lead out of pre-cut latigo strap, from Tandy. And am keeping it simple, i.e. Hand loop, edges beveled only for the handle and the clasp at the bottom. It will be used all weather and off the beaten path. I stitched the handle and the clasp. And while the stitches at the clasp came out good, the stitches at the handle loop make Frankenstein's stitches look like fine art..! So, I was thinking of putting a simple long Turks Head knot over those stitches. I would use a mandrel to tie the knot and slide it down the lead and tighten in place. The strap is not round and I have only seen braided knots on round objects and that is my question. Will a br…

Hi everyone, I am not quite sure what I am doing wrong. I am new to braiding and have just started trying to learn how to braid around a padded dowel core with kangaroo laces. Obviously, in the top picture of my latest attempt I have relaxed the tension to take the photo, but the braid seems to end up looking this loose regardless of what I do. Will it tighten up if I continue? I have been undoing it and restarting over and over due to the looseness, but maybe I should be leaving it and tightening it later (as I did in attempt 2, below)? I'm not sure if I've not prepped properly or something. I am using pre cut kangaroo laces. Should I b…
