I wanted to try something different so I carved a floral design and then air brushed/painted in the middle. Haven't air brushed since the 80's so it was a little challenging.

Nice work.

You have some 'chop' in the beveling, but you clearly have an understanding of form and shadow, so I won't harp there :)

JL, yeah I was pounding the heck out of it. I usually case leather overnight but this one I just sponge cased and I could really tell the difference.

Well, no harm done -- looks GOOD. Are your 'hi-lites' white, or natural leather? I steer from white dye, which has never been made well, and acrylics, which don't survive well on projects that flex ...

JL, this is all acrylic (createx wicked). I normally use dye and use the leather as the mid-tone but wanted to try something else. The highlights are white acrylic and yeah, whites always a pain because of discoloration. Overall, I like dye better. It sprays easier thru an air brush also.

Thanks Leather! It was kind of an experiment but I'll know what not to do next time.

Fiebings used to have a solvent based white dye that worked great. Used it for white highlights, teeth, etc. years ago. It held, and you could thin it so that the background leather dye or other coloring came through. Don't know if they make it any longer.

Man that is awesome!! I'm interested in trying to airbrush instead of paint by hand...in the interest of savings some time.....how detailed can you get with an airbrush? Keep up the good work!

Well...I Can apparently zoom in with the iPad...looks like you can get a decent amount of detail using the airbrush!

Double, this was my first time air brushing sine the 80's so I kept it really basic. Depending on the air brush, you can get less than a pencil line. You pretty much have to know what you are going to do with it and what you are spraying through it before you buy one. Dyes are easy because they are thin and you use them straight from the bottle. When you get into acrylics (like this one) you have to thin the paint and keep the tip of your brush clean. I have several air brushes now, some for really fine detail, but if you want to pick up an all around brush I'd look at the Badger 150 set with 3 different tips and needles. Catch it at a sale at Michaels. You can pretty much spray anything through it. Then grab a cheap compressor.

Man! Great gouge...thank you so much for sharing. Your "not airbrushing since the 80's" doesn't even show...at least to me....keep on keeping on brother, love your stuff.
