1911 Shoulder Rig
Jaymack replied to JoshDuvall's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Thanks for the advice officer bob, but my comment was purely to acknowledge the 3 clips on his shoulder holster. What advice do you have on a holster to prevent you from being hung up or a BG using it as a dog collar? Any thickness of leather or nylon would have to be cut if you got hung up, and I haven’t seen a breakaway holster yet. If it could break away, wouldn’t then the determined/high BG have your gun? -
1911 Shoulder Rig
Jaymack replied to JoshDuvall's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
If I have a .45 and 4 clips of ammo, it's not likely that anybody is going to use my shoulder holster against me!!! BTW Beautiful work on your rig Josh! -
I don't have an account at Weaver Leather and can't locate the other posts. Does anyone know where to buy the U S oval stamps? Thanks

I was responding to the "Tandy Doodle Pages" thread. I wanted to show anyone interested how easy it was to modify a jpg picture into an outline for carving. I don't know how this response turned into a new topic. I didn't realize or had seen where GIMP had been addressed in this forum. I just wanted to share.

I was reading this post, so I decided to share a free shareware program that I use for patterns. I downloaded the jpg that Dan posted as a response. I used the program to clean up the surrounding colors leaving only the outline that you would use as the template. Took less than 5 minutes. The program is very powereful and comparable to photoshop and is absolutely free. Just google the word GIMP and follow the instructions. Just thought I'd share since i've learned so much from this forum since I joined a few months ago! I may even have the courage to post some of the things I've made some day! lol John P.S. Don't copy the attachment as it was intended to show what the GIMP software is capable of doing. I could have done alot more to clean this up, but honestly, it took no more tan 2 minutes to do what I did.

That happened to me the first time I used lining for a case. The next time, I glued the lining in after I made the fold. It worked for me!

I'm a noob to leatherworking. I bought my stamping tools on ebay, and a couple stops were included. What are stops used for. If you have a couple of pictures or examples, I would truly appreciate it. Thanks, John

I am going to carve the Logo of my company. My company is Spartan Structures and I have attached the logo. I would like to carve the helmet to look like scarred, pitted metal. I am looking for suggestions on how to tool the helmet. Thanks, John

Wallet with Clan Crest
Jaymack replied to azrider's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
A great gift. Once I get a litttle better, I plan on tooling my family clan's crest on something. Thanks for showing your wallet off! This is my Clan's crest. I have some ideas on how to carve and tool this, but I'm not sure how I'm going to do the fire. Luceo Non Uro = I Shine Not Burn -
Is there a thickness of leather that is easier for a beginner to knife and tool. Is thinner leather more forgiving, or is it the other way around that thicker leather is better for beginners? Thanks, John

I print on 8 1/2" x 11" velum that I get from staples. 50 sheets for $8 to $9. This paper works with inkjet or laser printers. It is also strong enough to withstand a stylus. translucent like tracing paper.

Hi, I'm new to leather crafting, but after my first project I have a couple questions. 1. How do you prevent tool marks when backgrounding. 2. What weight mallet do you use for each general tooling procedure. For example, when you basketweave, what weight mallet do you use, or when you bevel or background, what weight do you use. Is there a rule of thumb, especially since I lack any experience. I've been monitoring all of your work on this forum for a couple weeks before I tackled my first project. This forum has been a huge help. I've seen some amazing examples that in my wildest dreams I never thought could be done with leather! Thanks for your help! John

I like the way you have the trigger and guard showing. The 1911's single action makes this a great design!
