Leather Tooling Version Of Writers Block
newfiebackflip replied to newfiebackflip's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
I had already thought of that too actually just not interested in doing the crown with it. So maybe i will just do the barrels and find acrylic paint that looks close to a brass color or something and do that. Thanks for your input Radar -
Hey everyone, I have just finished creating a traditional fold over pattern for a knife sheath. But I am having some creativity issues with what I would like to tool on it. The guy I am making it for is currently serving in the Canadian Forces Artillery. I was thinking of doing something sorta related to his trade but didn't want to make it tacky. Not really looking to do any sort of western or floral designs either. Not sure if this is going to be one of those less is more projects or not. Any thoughts or idea's? Thanks

I was curious if anyone has made a "shot bag" or "sand bag" for metal forming before? I would just like to know what would be the best type of leather to handle the constant pounding and punishment that comes from the hammer and metal. For the most part, the ones that I have seen on the internet are made out of cowhide (thats what they label it as on their sites) but could latigo or veg-tan bends work? The average thickness that I have seen is 3-4 oz. Should something like these bags be sewn with a machine or would hand stitch work just fine (double stitched of course) Any info is good info unless its try google. Thanks for looking and your input.

Good day all! I have searched a majority of threads and came up empty on what I am about to ask. How do you guys/gals secure and seal gold leaf on your leather projects so it doesn't get to damaged? Thanks, Darren

Sheath Help
newfiebackflip replied to newfiebackflip's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Just as an update. I totally screwed the pooch on the stitching. It was super thick and the awl didn't go through evenly So I launched it in a fit of rage across the house lol So after I move this weekend where I will be able to set up my own private little shop, I will give it a go again. Thankfully I was doing this as a learning project for free, my buddy who I was doing it for is really understanding and is leaving the knife with me so I can practise more. -
Hi Particle, Yes I was. I will check it again. I had issues before but that is probably just user error lol

I am in the Canadian Forces and I have been in for 10 years now. The best way without totally screwing your boots up and getting in major crap by the Regimental Sergeant Major is a long boring and sometimes painful process of using spit, cold water, kiwi boot polish, kiwi cloth, elbow grease and a whole lot of free time. There is no real way to cheat it, I have tried the majority of them and I have gone through a lot of boots. It will take hours and hours to even get a good base coat, but you keep to keep at it. The only good little cheat I can offer is when you store your boots, put each boot in pantyhose. This way its harder to scratch your mirror finish and the micro fibres actually kinda help the shine a bit. This is the steps I use. 1) Put cold water in the lid of your Kiwi Polish 2) Wrap kiwi cloth around your trigger finger 3) Saturate your finger/cloth with water 4) Get a small bit of polish on the wet cloth 5) Small circular motions with the polish ( make sure when you start to feel some friction re-wet the cloth) As the boot starts to to shine a bit don't be affraid to let a little spit drip from your mouth onto the surface. You don't need a lot! Also as it starts to get a nice gloss go over it again with the wet cloth and more polish but this time you can make the circular motion bigger and bigger. Your going to be going over the same spots over and over and over. Hope this helps

Messenger Bag
newfiebackflip replied to AndyL1's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
I just found out not to long ago that I am expecting my first child and instantly I looked for manly diaper bags and found nothing I liked. So then I decided to make my own and found your thread. Awesome work dude, I can't wait to see your other ones! -
I just have a question that has been on my mind the last couple of days. When sewing or stitching something along the lines of a purse or bag etc and you want the stitching to remain hidden, how do you go about that? Is it simple as you sew with flesh side out and then just flip it right side out type of deal? Darren

Sheath Help
newfiebackflip replied to newfiebackflip's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
What I had redone last night looks similar to that sheath. Customer didn't want it to go back that far, he wants a good chunk of the handle left out. I might do some moulding for it, but I might be doing an inlay too. I might make one of each because he might like one version than the other and these knives are every where so someone else might just pick up the other version. -
Sheath Help
newfiebackflip replied to newfiebackflip's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
Thanks everyone for the help! I am just going to go off my abilities at this moment and say the angles of the knife will be to complicated to make a tight fit without any sort of strap to keep the knife in place. There will be some wiggle room but not to much where it will fall out... i don't think. I guess the best bet is to mock it up with real leather and give it a go. Tree Reaper: It sure is a DH Russel, holds a great edge. -
I probably should of posted this in the Holster and Sheath section. I guess there is no way to switch it over oooopps. Ok I have a customer who has given me a knife to make a sheath for. To me it looks like a stake knife but its actually a military issued knife for cutting parachute line in an emergency. Here is my question. Where the blade meets the handle there is a nice little curve so your finger can sit there while cutting. What do you think would work best for the welt? I wasn't sure if i followed the natural curve of the knife the blade won't fit in the sheath. Should I end the welt before the curve? Thanks, Darren

I must say all though this isn't my cup of tea, it seems like a cool and interesting sub culture.

Could someone explain steam punk to me in simple terms? I googled it and from what I gather its a bunch of people who dress in old victorian style clothing mixed with modern/futuristic technology?
