  1. what is a Rein Rounder? I make Whips and am leaning toward leather cors rather than lead fill bellies (makes a lighter but livelier whip). Always interested in ways to make things easier.
  2. how thick of leather can it sew and are parts avliable?
  3. Did not think to ask because he knew i was looking for a used machine. He took my number and said he would call if he runs into anything that would do what I need and is in a price range I can live with.
  4. I already talked to Cobra Steve his shop is righ down the street from me. Sound like he has some great machines but I can not justify the expence of a new machine. I simply would not use it enough to make money.
  5. Thank you both I will give it a pass, 1/4" is thick enough but not sure all the leather will be "soft leather"
  6. Seller tells me it is a walking foot machine and can sew "thick" leather. Dammed if I know what thick is to him. He also said it was just serviced and he is selling it for $300. 2 questions: 1. Is it a fair price? 2. Any idea how thick it can sew leather?
  7. I can see I have a lot of work to get done. Any chance you have a list of the keyword searche that failed to produce hits and the ones that are producing hits. I am mostly interested in words like flogger, whip, dragon tail, collar, paddle cat O 9, snake whip, signal whip. bull whip.
  8. Will a singer 401 sew leather up to 1/4" Hope I am not being a pain with all the requests for info but I have NO expierence or info on sewing machines. Mike
  9. Thank you very much, I will pass it by and find one that is dependable. I do not have any preference on who makes them just want something that I can sew leather up to a max of about 1/4".
  10. Any advice on how thick of leather this can sew and are parts still avliable for it? Also somone mentioned a table with needle and thread sizes, where might I find one?
  11. what is a walking foot and when is it needed? What is a good sewing speed for a for thickness up to 1/4" Suggestions on machines that will do well up to 1/4" what is a drop thread as opposed to a needle thread
  12. I Know nothing about sewing machines but need to be able to sew liners into cuffs collars and such as well as be able to sew bellys for whip handles. I found a consew 210 that is local and was wondering if anyone had any idea how thick of a leather it might be able to sew. Also any suggestions on older machines for leather sewing would be much appriciated.
  13. Couple of questions: Can you show me how to do that? How long did it take?
  14. I am loving the splitter, the only change I would like to see is the ability to lock the hand grip in the closed poosition so I could put it in a vicew when splitting down long strings. (this tool taught me that brand new stanly utility knife blades, need to be sharpened before they are used). I have tried a couple of projects without beveling the edges and it seems to be working very well (only trid this with kangroo hide as cow is probably not strong enough; with the kangaroo I have taken the thickness down to 1/64th inch without breaking the laces while braiding. Like the new style lace cutter but have not yet tried making a set of tapered strings to avoid having to drop strings as I braid. I will gve that a try in a month or so after I am more fimuliar with the cutter. Mike
  15. Morning, have seen a few of your posts and I am also in So cal. In Rialto which is not far from the 10 and the 15.

  18. That was exectly the question I asked him and liked the answer. I like the idea of being able to set 2 sizes to get the taper from the get-go. I am interested in seeing if I need to bevle the edges after I have the splitter seems to me it might be unessary with very thin leather but I will find out in due time
  19. I descided to try the splitter and cutter from Dene Williams, Partly because of the price and partly because I have and use the origional AU strander and the new one sounds like a good idea. I will post about how I like it after I get it (should be on its way as I type) and gibe it a few trys.
  20. Thank you very much, I wrote to him and will get one of each if that is true.
  21. WOW, I looked at both and they both are great sugestions. The one made by White Bluff; how do you control the depth that you are splitting the strings? Also what type of blade does it use?
  22. Looking for any info I can get for smaller scale leather spliters. I have heard that the splitters (such as the Osbone's) aer not great for splitting thin leather such as kangaroo. any one seen mabe a home made one that uses a replacable blade such as a single edged razor blade? I never split anything wider that about 1/2" so splitter with 6' wide blades are not great for me. Also I suspect a smaller cutting angle might be better for this thin of material. Many thanks for any help you might have to offer.
  23. So far all I do for length is double the length I am braiding and add about 6". If you have a more precise way I would love to hear it.
