I'm rather partial of bones or antlers for my tools.... the bone tools that Tandy sells can easily be modified into custom tools.... the plastic should work too as long as your sure to get it as smooth as you can, polished if possible, to prevent damage to your project.... just be sure to test whatever you make on scrap and you should come up with something that'll fit your needs....
-
to put it simply, tools and techniques.... you'll have to experiment with different tools to use for molding and boning and will most likely wind up creating your own at some point.... I'm also curious.... is this an IWB without attachments added yet or a pancake style OWB without the slots cut.... if it's an OWB, you may want to bring the "ears" in a bit closer next time....

I do this full time and use a Cowboy 4500 daily.... I agree with everything renegade said above....

Kydex Holster Clip Alternative?
joshk replied to Rayban's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I'm just curious as to what size kydex you guys are having, or have heard of, issues with? I've been using .125" for a while now on all my clips and haven't had any failures reported back to me yet.... temperatures can also be a major factor in breakage issues with kydex.... or any other plastic for that matter.... if you get it too hot it will still mold and hold the shape, but the plastic itself will become much more brittle once it stiffens back up.... -
I'll take 'em both.... message sent....

Can You Smell The Bbq?!?
joshk replied to DHopper's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I'd go with a 4-5oz liner if you're going to use the 11-12oz strips.... that'll keep the width right around 1/4" which has somewhat become the standard thickness for gun belts.... you'd come out with a much stronger belt if you got some 7-8oz strips and where able to criss-cross the grain.... if you cut the strips yourself from sides like I do it's easy to keep track of the grain direction with a few arrows from a sharpie on the back of the strips.... when you're ready to glue the strips just make sure the arrows are pointing opposite directions.... -
Some Recent Work
joshk replied to chiefjason's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I gotta agree with Mike.... they look pretty good, but those stitch lines need to be tightened up quite a bit.... especially in the front of the trigger guard.... if you're hammering the models into the rig the trigger guard should be bottoming out against the surrounding stitch line.... my advice, in addition to the trigger guard stitching, would be to not leave so much excess at the end of the muzzle and shorten the stitch lines around the muzzle as well.... here's a little quick editing and a side by side pic with the Glock rig to give you a better idea what I'm talking about.... the stitch line was moved closer to the trigger guard and the excess material/stitching cleaned up a bit.... -

is the belt a single strip? if so, what weight leather did you use? if it's not thick enough it'll eventually stretch and sag under the weight of a Commander alone.... -

3Rd Holster. Looking For Feedback.
joshk replied to Grabagear's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I'll note that I would add a bit more clearance to the trigger guard area to allow for a full and unimpeded grip.... -
