New Rig I Just Finished Up....
joshk replied to joshk's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
thanks for the compliments folks! Go2Tex.... this holster is pretty much my version of the old Bianchi Gunsite or Davis Omega rig.... the Omega rig had a similar rear plate attachment.... I added the belt loop slot and reworked the tabs so they'll slide under a belt loop if needed.... also, they are not reinforced as this is just meant to be a range/competition rig.... we had a big thunderstorm roll through last night that kept me up all night so I took advantage and worked up a matching double mag pouch with scaled down diamond cuts.... this is one of the only things I've ever worked up that didn't involve power tools which was awesome considering the power kept going in and out.... -
Need Help On Saving Patterns...
joshk replied to Sixer's topic in Gun Holsters, Rifle Slings and Knife Sheathes
I usually have a scanned copy of all my leather patterns saved in a couple of places.... if I'm going to use it more than once I transfer it to a scrap piece of leather and use that as a template for future rigs.... -

New Rig I Just Finished Up....

I've been a long time reader of the forums here but have never shared any work.... I just finished this one up earlier this morning and was pretty pleased with the way it came out so I figured it was worth sharing.... -

all of the machines I'm looking at are fully capable at perfoming the work I need it to.... what I'm worried about is when the manufacturer or dealer states something like this about the CB2500: "The Cowboy CB2500 has feed dogs to move the material, against a fixed, or roller pressor foot. This may leave visible tooth marks in the bottom layer of leather." now granted, they do mention that the marks should be able to be easily tooled out.... but I'm wondering how bad they are to begin with....
-
thanks guys! I haven't heard anything bad about the Cowboy CB3500/CB4500 or Cobra Class 3/Class 4.... just wasn't sure if they left any kind of marks too.... the main machine I'm interested in is the Cowboy CB2500.... hopefully somebody has a few pics of that one's stitching they can share....
-
I've been doing quite a bit of research into sewing machines for holster making.... I have noticed there seem to be a few models where people constantly comment about feed dogs marking the bottom of the leather, but there's nothing to use for visual reference.... would it be possible for a few members with a little spare time to post pics of the bottom of their stitching to get an idea about marks being left? in particular I'm thinking of Cowboy CB2500 & CB3500, Techsew GA5-1R, and Cobra Class 3.... my thanks to anyone able to post pics, Josh

I bought these to work up a few special rigs for a customer have no further need for them. They are all in new condition and have been cleaned up a bit. I'd like to sell them as a group to save on shipping and will throw in a pretty well used ASP M&P 9/40 compact red gun model for free. The XDm models include the 3.8 9/40, FS 9/40, and FS 45. $115 shipped for the whole group. Please email josh@shopleatherworks.com if you are interested.

you can add me to that list too! I've got quite a few of the shanks already.... possible to get just the wood bits?

I'm wanting to keep using pull the dot snaps on my holsters but have started using a slightly thicker leather that the posts won't fit through. I've been using the .370 (5/16") posts from DOT direct. I am needing to find something that is about 1/8" longer. I've looked all over the web and am having no luck. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I appreciate the help.

i recently did a holster that had stingray applied to it.... i was told by the guys at Tandy to use a Dremel to grind down the bumps so you could punch through them.... i wound up just using the 1/16" hand punch, the one that looks like a paper hole punch, and got the holes punched without any problems....
-
i've had the same problem and tried the Preval sprayers from Tandy.... i was not very happy with the spray they threw out.... it seemed to almost texture the resolene.... i was able to find a cheap airbrush air pump on craigslist and bought a $15 HVLP detail sprayer from Harbor Freight and have had great success with that combo.... i'd say it's a small investment for saving yourself many headaches....

thanks guys.... i've actually told my customers who have requested it that the felt interior can wind up causing more finish damage than the finished leather interior.... however, they insist on having the felt lining.... i'm not sure whether i should just use contact cement to bond it to the leather or sew it in?
-
I've been thinking about adding a felt lining to my holsters to help protect the firearm's finish.... I have never attempted this and am not 100% on the best way to go about adding it.... does anyone have any tips, mainly for bonding the felt to the leather, they could pass my way that would help?
