  1. Oh, gosh! I responded to the wrong thread somehow and that is why my comments did not make any sense! I would still have preferred a dark brown thread, or white if you want contrast instead. I don't know why but personally I do not like black thread on brown dye.
  2. From what I can see, it has a clean look
  3. Yes, people here are very nice. Did she want it for competitions?
  4. Ok, I did some tests. All we have to test with right now are different browns and black (that red color is a red brown). So if some of them look remarkably the same... that's because they are. I numbered them in the photos. I do like #2 and #3 which are both the british tan with darker brown on top instead of black. I think I hate #6 which... ... See MoreSee More was medium brown with black overlay. #4 is the same as the #1 you guys saw earlier but with a lot less black. #5 is cordovan on medium brown http://twitpic.com/183rx9 http://twitpic.com/183rzy http://twitpic.com/183s1w Also for some reason on another forum it seems like a lot of people did not like my first test colors. I don't know if they would like them if they saw them on an actual project.
  5. Like the rig Welcome to the forum - I'm new too
  6. Well this one is just a guitar strap but I could redesign it for a belt if someone wanted that
  7. Thanks! Next time I will try not having the yellow stand out so much, following feedback I got elsewhere. But I am still pleased with how it worked out.
  8. http://twitpic.com/17z7tt I'm a newb at this leather stuff, so I designed this to need very little tooling and to depend more on the painting. Pretty happy with out it turned out for one of my first projects! That being said if you have any suggestions for how to make something like this better - the tooling or the painting - let me know. I'd done some test painting on undyed leather and found the spirit-dyed leather behaved differently and at that point I had to improvise a little!
  9. LOL thanks, his name is Corwin and he's 8 months old now. I'll be trying this effect again with some different colors, later. If I learn about anything similar I'll try that too at the same time
  10. I was playing and got this. Dyed it british tan first then put some black dye on a sponge and let it mostly dry, then rubbed that in for the overlay. I like two-toned effects like this and am still learning. What do you think? http://twitpic.com/17xfh3
  11. Gluing on a flat surface is fine. Just make sure you sew them. That strengthens them and keeps them from bending when bent.
  12. Love the intricate design on the front and the rustic look

love the way the edges look
  14. Maybe another kind of lining would work better. I know that to the untrained eye (such as myself) dyed pigskin lining looks the same as felt. If there is another material that would be better than felt you may be able to convince the customer to let you use that. I do know that sewing is important. Without it the lining will start to come up right away
  15. I would use brown thread to go with that light color. Of course if you are using a sewing machine a lot of thread comes by the lb and can be harder to get in small quantities. In that case I would dye it a medium brown, cordovan, or black if the color is up to you.
  16. If you don't mind a rivet showing, I don't see that you'd have to sew at all. I would take one long piece of leather that is already dyed, punch holes where you want the beads to stop on each end, and bend the ends of the leather over to the back to make the loops. Rivet the leather to itself and to the string. You could make a channel by carving an indent along the middle of the leather before dyeing. I've never made these but I imagine that might work. If you have trouble getting the beads to stay in the center, maybe punch a few holes to have the bead string go through to the back and then come right out the front again.
  17. I like how it is brown/red with black. Did you dye it the brown/red color and then add black?
  18. thank you, terrahyd :)
