  1. i like the way the stitching highlights some of the details. very nice.
  2. just thought id add that peice of useless info :)

  3. we also use yonks in lancashire.......and donkeys, means the same thing.

  4. i use resolene, applied with a damp sponge. i like to buff the leather after its been dyed then coat with resolene and ive not had any problems yet.
  5. very very nice how do you get it so dark where youve used the matting tool?
  6. ahhhhh thanks guys. so i need a groove cutter too. ill order both. thanks
  7. just a quick question, but is there a vid or somthing on one being used to mark the holes prior to awling and stitching. i guessed that you just push it but cant seem to find any info on them??
  8. really nice......what was the background tool?
  9. Uneven transferring of your pattern could you please explain a bit more, this part lost me. and would you say i needed a bigger background stamp,i only have one ( tandy A104)
  10. hi mate cool strap. if i could point out somthing that i noticed ( im a novice at this too ) but one thing im very conscious about is beveling marks. where youve beleved on the second picture down its very easy to notice the individual bevel tool marks, clean them up by gently going back over with the same tool with a lot less pressure or a modeling spoon. i was thinking of making a strap for my ibanez but ive stopped playing so no point....it would only go when i sell the guitar.
  11. thanks mate.have you put up some pics of your double rig,i love gunrigs.only proib is i live in england and guns are a big nono. ive been leather carving now for about 4 weeks. the pattern is from buscadero belts and holsters. theres a pic with the belt, ive now finished the backgrounding and now on to the detail ( getting nervous now lol)
  12. then there was 2. although some slight ...ahem....differences,maybe taking on a double holster rig isnt the best idea for a newbie lol.
  13. hi kate nothing special,i use greaseproof paper ( in the uk we also call it tracing paper from when we were at school). i just dampen the leather then then put the paper ontop and slowly draw over the top with a byro. its my third attempt at carving,so if there is a better way then im open to suggestions. what methos do you use? skippy
  14. just started a new buscadero double gunrig and thought id show my work so far ( as im pretty chuffed at how it turned out ) edges could be cleaned up a bit better and ill have to look into buying a stitch marking wheel to make the stitches look tidier. only problem now is i have to make the left hand holster identical.............
  15. anyone know where i can get the pattern for clints famous fast draw gunrig. i know its an anderson rig and have found pictures but i cant decide if its a straight belt or curved belt.
  16. either google bullwhip making or look on youtube. also look for bernies bullwhips ( em brand or somthing like that) bernie has bullwhip vids on youtube that cover the whole building of a bullwhip. and i recommend the australian strand maker.....bought that and never looked back. ive only bought 1 book on braiding leather braiding by bruce grant,it covers everything i needed. hope this helps. skippy
  17. thanks guys cant beleive i missed the section for figure carving but ill be spending a long time going through it. theres some really amazing work on there.
  18. this may ( or may not) seem a strange question but another gunrig ive been contemplating came with the carving design, one design has a deer and the other has a bulls head. whats the best tool/technique for creating a fur like appearance?. if you know of any links to web pages or vids that demonstrate this would bew appreciated. thanks in advance skippy
  19. might be a bit late for a reply but here goes. bullwhips arent made from patterns except maybe the shotbag ( i prefer rawhide shaped to a coil) the rest is literally braidied and bolstered ( sleeves over the belly braids).
  20. thats very nice...like the colour a lot. a quick question as im a newbie as well, how does the neatsfoot oil effect the leather,i was told not to use it as it would soften the leather...has yours softened or not. cheers mate
  21. thanks guys, its actually quite a rewarding hobby.just finished dying it a dark tan and im suprised how it seems to highlight the camoflauged areas,i always thought those areas were dyed with a darker dye but apparently not. ill be cleaning the edges tommorow then i will attempt resolening it all ( apparently the damp sponge is best for this). i may well look for the tandy book....and get some more stamps as i need a smaller beveler and a gauge cutter. thanks for the positive comments. skippy
  22. hi everybody. been lurking on this forum a while so i thought id post somthing. this is my second attempt at leather carving. 2 years ago i ended up with some basic tools for carving so i thought id finally give it a go. needs cleaning up and stitching together but im actually quite happy with it......probably not up to other members standards lol. be gentle with me.
