  1. Just a Head

(FWIW I've read Joanna's tutorial, John Henry's and couple on the Masks forum)

How do I make a molded dragon head purse?

I want to make a small purse that's dragon head shaped. I've got some examples that give a general idea. One is more art than usable purse, 2nd is a discarded alligator plushie. I want to mold it like the art purse, but shaped more like the plushie with a more triangular head.

Seems like this has to be a turn out in order not to show stitches?

If I'm going to mold this 1" up from my base do I start with a piece of leather that's something like 1 3/4" bigger than the base?

What's the most 4-6oz belly leather can be stretched? Shoulder leather?

Don't suppose the leather gives any kind of warning before it cracks?

Is there some kind of conditioning to make leather easier to stretch?

I'm making a plug, but why is molding pull down and not push out from back?

Do people ever use just foam for their plugs? Any special type?

Current plan is take 2 - 1x4s cut into "more triangular" shapes, shim up at back to get a wedge profile, and put a piece on top to get an approximate forehead shape. This is the rough shape, planning to goin with finer tools for some detailing.

  2. There is a sub forum for masks but since this is a purse I don't see the relevance to masks. If you want to wet form it over a triangular wooden shape, just make sure you have 1/4th inch to nail it down. Do it at the edge of the 1/4th so you'll have room to cut off the nail holes after it dries. However it's beyond me how you will sew it inside out at that shape.

If you wanted to tool a dragon purse it would be much easier and maybe nicer. We had a dragon challenge a while back in the 'contests' forums and I did a carved one by finding a picture online and leaving it up on my screen while I drew and carved it. This wasn't the best by any means and the picture isn't a good one but I think you'll get the idea.

I hope someone else will come along and help you as far as molding it, and turning it inside out to sew. Cheryl

Ok Cheryl, so after 89 views and 2 comments, a crosspost to bags and purses it is.

the relevance to masks would be that they mold fantasy figures, some with long noses.

    thx

  3. Hmm, I think you're going to have to experiment a lot. You could wet-form veg tanned, but I really don't know how well that would work unless you could form it over a dragon-head shaped mold. You could work with paper and figure out a pattern.... you could look up patterns for dragon stuffed animal heads, enlarge them, and turn it inside out after you stitch it together.

Well, Monica while I had hoped that this wasn't totally new ground and someone could cut down on the experimenting this is current plan...

Suppose I took 2 - 1x4s cut into "more triangular" shapes, shimmed between at back to get the wedge shape, screwed a piece of PVC on top to get an approximate forehead shape, then went from there.

It's the turn out part I'm most worried about as tip of nose is 1 1/8 x 2 1/4.

Thinking – nail/clamp a piece of leather to a flat "more triangular" shaped wood base, then push up the features.

Seems like this has to be a turn out in order not to show stitches?

Is there some kind of conditioning to make leather much easier to stretch?

Is there a sub-forum for masks that would be more appropriate place to ask these ques?

    Thanks for any help

  6. Usually only veg-tan leather is used for tooling, know from experience that chrome-tan is Very difficult to make an impression on. Chrome-tan where it hasn't been dyed will have a blue/grayish color (u would probably have to cut into an edge and even then on thin leather u may not see a undyed part).

Well I am also from Canada, from Saskatchewan even...and I need a change purse, something to hold my coins. I get tired of dumping them into the bottom of my purse...and never finding what I need for change when I need it. So I could use some direction for patterns!!!

never thought I needed one until made some mockups for a class (and 1 final version)

lets see if I can get pic on here (you'll see woven and stitched types)

  8. Tandy's waxed nyltex is strictly for hand sewing, it will not run in your 206. The thickest you could run easily is 138 nylon. Also unless you are making a work belt of 2 layers, nyltex is to thick and crude for finish work. Gump.

least I'm getting a sorta response here...

Again is there a downside besides the wax? Cause I could strip 40'.

Looking for thicker And willing to experiment, that 's why this thread.

T isn't saying Ntlex for all 4 of these, or is this just "understood".

    Thx Gump

  9. My Adler 67 takes 134 system needles, this is certain. The largest needle that came with the machine was a Groz Beckert 110/18 labelled as:

    134

    DPx5

    135x5

    135x7

    797

    SY 1955

I ordered a packet of Schmetz 130/21 as required for my heavy canvas work. These needles are labelled:

    NM:130 SIZE:21

    Canu:32:10 1

    134-35

    2134-35

    DPx35

Here's the problem, the needle rubs hard against the hook mechanism. This of course is not good.

The bigger needle is also much longer.

have I selected the wrong needle or do I need to make an adjustment? All of this needle carry on has set me back a month now, I must buy needles online and I thought I had it sorted.

    Please help.

    John

I think changing needles (grind down shank) makes more sense than adjusting machine to accommodate needles
needle that was in machine was working ok? I'd have talk w/ whoever u ordered from

  10. i know very little about sewing machines what is compound feed? Il try to do that dirt clod, I wouldn't know how to pick a proper machine and would be just guessing. Are there any machines in particular that are widely available vintage machines. I've seen some singers for leather go for around 150-200 unsure if they will do leathers that are 7.5mm. What I'm looking for- The needle doesn't need to be shaped like an awl but does need to work on 7.5mm leathers or thicker working condition hand operated between 100-200 dollars vintage is better Are there any machines off the top of your head that fit the bill?

generally they feed using combination of bottom feed, and 2 presser feet(needle moves w/ inner foot). Reason is to have continuous top feed pressure and prevent slippage.

    singer are most widly avail.

When I said: U can handwheel almost anything, I ment can put a handwheel on almost anything.

look another w/ same idea!! u guys should merge

  11. I think u guys are ones to ask this:

I'm looking for smaller quanity of thread (just one belt), and want to use in a sewing machine. I'd consider using the Tandy sewing threads, but catalogue and even sales staff don't seem to know what the thicknesses are. Yes, I sent this ques through T website too, but u know...

    Thx

  12. Th

Something like an old singer that doesn't use electricity. By heavy duty it can punch out up to 1cm of leather. Just by looking at the old machines I can't tell if it will work.

U can handwheel almost anything or are u saying treadle?

For those on other side of divide, 1cm = .39" or slightly more than 3/8".

U will probably still want a compound feed, that narrows it some.

Guess it would depend on the leather and size of the needle.

U remember the advice to take a piece of the leather u intend to sew with u when going to examine machine, this is reason.

  13. 1. Any machines out there that can replicate a diamond hole that is seen with a stitching awl. Im comfortable hand stitching leather goods by hand, but for larger objects a sewing machine that can punch out hole like an awl will be useful and time saving.

    2. It is only going to be used for punching out the holes and i don't intend to sew on it.

    3. The ones I had in mind are the heavy duty manual singer machines that are used for leather. Tippman also comes to mind but comes in at 1 grand and id prefer to pay 100-200.

U might find some old machine that u could put a diamond shaped needle into just to stab the holes.
    Define Heavy Duty...
To get that low a price you'll also need to find some seller who admits that their machine is just good for parts.
