I am leaving the leatherworking hobby/business and planning to sell everything I have. I will be selling my Cobra Class 4 with all the tools and accessories. I think it is what they now call the premium package, since it has the holster plate and a couple of others, blanket accessory kit, heavy duty edge guide and some other stuff in addition to the standard tool set and thread stand. Also has a bolt-on table surround to make the arm a flat surface. This set sells for about $3,400 now days, and I'd like to get $2,000 for mine. I will include all the thread, bobbins and needles I have on hand as well. I'm in Gulf Breeze, Florida. Marginally better than Virginia, anyway! -Steve

Thanks. I got the Tandy pattern pack which gave some insight. I also went to Tractor Supply and took some pictures of a nice Weaver breast collar. I'm going to make one, put it on a horse and adjust fire from there. The Tandy pattern came with a halter and bridle pattern. I made the halter and the strap lengths were way off. It gave me something to start with, though. I can salvage the hardware, anyway. Such is the learning process. That sounds good I'm going to try to make one this weekend. Thanks!

Greetings! I got great help when I was trying to figure out how to use the strap plate on my Cobra 4, so I thought I'd give the mob a shot at another Cobra question. I'm still working on that first halter, between Honey-Do list items, and I am wondering about sewing in the rings. The machine comes with a foot that Steve from Leather Machine Company says is for sewing "right up to something." I have tried it out, and I don't see any difference in the profile of the foot, its length, or any other aspect of the thing that gets me any closer to the ring. Any thoughts on the subject? Any advice in sewing up to the ring or buckle would be appreciated. I'm considering going to hand stitching, since none of the stitch lines are longer than about 2 inches on the single layer pony halter. However, I'm doing a double layer halter next, and reallllly don't want to hand stitch that. Thanks in advance! -Steve

I haven't heard back from Steve, yet. I may have to call him. Well, the issue is that the leather doesn't move at all, not that it doesn't move the right amount. If I don't pull the leather along a bit, all the stiches go in one hole and jamb up the bobbin hook. I'm giong to try tightening up the foot pressure.

So...I guess going to need a splitter soon. I've actually been considering getting one for a while. Maybe this is the excuse I need.

Good morning! I have been using my Cobra 4 to sew holsters and knife sheaths for a little while now, and I just got induced to start making horse tack. The Cobra 4 instructions say to remove the feed dog and install the narrow slot needle plate, along with the adjustable guide wheel. I have done all that and when I try to sew, the leather doesn't move. I'm sure the solution is something simple, since this is a popular machine, but I'm not sure what to do. The machine comes with a holster plate, which I tried some time ago with the same results and a stirrup plate that I haven't bothered to mess with. I am hoping somebody out there can give me some hints on how to make these accessories work. Thanks for any advice!! -Steve

Thanks, Mike. I'll have to look up the leather store in Mobile. I get over there about once a month. I'm always open to a new source where I can see what I'm buying. There is one place in Pensacola that sells some leather and suppplies, but they are very expensive and quite limited.

Thanks, Bob. I appreciate the insight. The harness leather I bought in anticipation of making tack is too thick to use as lining for this project. I'll get my hands on some latigo.

Greetings! I have been making holsters and knife sheaths for several years, so I have some basic techniques down, but horse tack is new to me. A customer wants a tooled and painted breasted collar and I need some advice on construction and leather selection. The tooling means veggie tan strap leather, but I am concerned about the strength of the piece. Do I just use really thinck strap leather, or do I combine it with traditional harness leather? Left to my own ignorance, I would sew the tooled leather on to a layer of 10 oz bridle leather to give strength and thickness. Also, is there a standard/ recommended width for breasted collars? Links to measurements of any tack would be appreciated. I now live in a horse area and can see more of this work coming up. Thanks! - STEVE

Just Getting Started - Bronc Halters

Those look great! I do tooling, but have never worked on halters. How do your pieces get attached to the halter? -
