Newbie Wants To Start A Belt And Possible Wallet Project
Glendon replied to ATTACKATTACKATTACK's topic in Getting Started
The starter kits available at Tandy are a perfect way to get started I think. The Deluxe Starter Kit is on sale right now. It comes with both a belt kit and wallet kit along with all the tools you need to start out. I would also pick up a bag of tooling leather remnants for $10. That gives you a pound of scrap to practice on very cheap. With shipping that would run you something around $100, and would keep you busy for awhile. -
Thank you everyone. Those links were all very helpful. I'll post some work soon.

Rather than create a new thread, I think I will chime in here as well. Just received my first Springfield order and I'm very happy with it. Since I'm just starting out as well as getting comfortable with suppliers, I made a relatively small order One of their horse butts (there are so many jokes I want to make here, but I know we've all thought of them), 1 lb of their remnant leather (for small projects and I think it's a good way to test a supplier. Gives you an idea of the quality they put into their work by looking at the size and quality they sell as scrap), and 5 sq ft of their gamblers choice leather. Ordered on Friday and received the order on Thursday. Not bad at all for a trip from their store to Boston, and that's with the order being hung up for a day by a mistake on my part. I ordered the gamblers choice and forgot to note any weight or color requests in the online order. I have to give them credit. They could have picked the cheapest odd lot they wanted to get rid of and sent to to me, but of course they didn't. I got a call Saturday afternoon from one of their sales reps to check with me about the order. Heather was real nice. Asked me what my planned projects were, what weight I'd like and if I had a color preference. They may not be able to match your needs to the letter, but it seems like they will do their best to get pretty close. A lot more accommodating on the gamblers choice than I was expecting. I explained I planned to do some practice small cases and pouches; pocket knife sheaths, belt pouches and the like, I asked for something in the 4-6oz range. As for color I asked for something in the earth tones but a little different than the standard browns and tans. What I received was a nice peace of leather in the 5-5.5 oz range in a grayish brown color. Nice looking, but something you don't see every day.One tiny little blemish up at the very top and a very little hole in a far corner. Neither are a big deal at all. The hole is so small I can nip it right off and the little imperfection is close enough to an edge I can just make a belt loop out of the area with no trouble. The rest of the hide looks perfect to my eye. For the price, it will be a perfect practice peace and as of right now I would have no problem ordering store choice from Springfield for peaces I intend to sell as long as I'm doing one offs. The horse butt was exactly as advertised. Not blemishes, no marks, no big problems of any kind. I wish they had listed average weight in the description, but not a problem really. Since they sell straps of the stuff I had a good guess of around what it would be and I assume most people ordering hose butts know what they're ordering. I also got an Osborne universal eyelet setter, a half spool of kangaroo lace, and one of the small Kydex samples they offer. Most expencive item in the order was the kangaroo lace, but they still made the effort to give me a call back. Not many bussness would do that any more. So ya, I'm pretty happy about the purchase I made with Springfield right now.

Hi everyone, Looking around the web I have seen leather roses and other leather flowers. I can think of a lot of projects that I'd love to use these 3D flowers for, and they look like a cool way to use up some scrap. Does anyone know where I can find patterns or instructions? The shapes look easy enough to make, but I'm not sure how I would put them together. I have a couple of ideas, but I'd rather not reinvent the wheel if I don't have to. I'd happily pay, but I'm not sure which instructions out there would be best. Thanks in advance.

Carved Ipad Cover
Glendon replied to boma's topic in Purses, Wallets, Belts and Miscellaneous Pocket Items
I love it. The basic pattern and sewing is very nice, I might have done something a little more contemporary for the strapping, but I still love it. The floral carving is just something else. Those big front covers do make for a great canvas if you have an eye for what to do with them.. -
I just finished my first read through of The Art of Making Leather Cases Vol. 1. I thought it was a great learning tool. It explains everything from pattern making, to forming, to strap design and attachment, all in the context of specific projects. I found the lack of an introduction a bit jarring. The book just jumps right into the first project, a basic pocket knife case, but once you get over that its a very useful book I think. As someone else on the forum said, no you will probably never make a CB case, but the techniques are invaluable. I already have my first project idea from the book. I'm going to borrow some techniques from the dice cup and thermos cover projects and make a water bottle holster I can use at conventions and trade shows.

Hello everyone, I'm a central Floridian transplanted to the big city in Boston first for college and now work. I was big into leather work when I was young in Boy Scouts. Now I'm starting to get back into the craft. I plan to start with some basic strap goods to get my tooling skills back up to scratch. I think I got the Leather Braiding book from Amazon and I think I'll play with that too. I'm thinking I might be able to sell some of these smaller projects at the local farmers markets. We'll see. I've been lurking here on LW for a couple of weeks and I love the community I'm seeing so I'll probably be around. Ultimately I'd like to start making some bags. I bought the first book in Stohlman's Leather Cases series so I have a bit of reading to do. I do have one question for you all. I would like to get a cheap work bench and set up a leather craft area for myself. I have a 68" strip of wall in my place I'm not using so I figure I have just enough space to set up a 60* bench. I'd like to spend $150 or less on a work space. Would the cheap metal frame benches you can get at Home Depot work alright for punching / stamping, or would I be destroying the thing pretty quick? If those wouldn't work, I'm thinking I might splurge for a bench I saw someone post here from Harbor Freight http://www.harborfreight.com/60-inch-solid-oak-workbench-93454.html but I don't want to spend the money if it really isn't needed. Thanks everyone.
