This Art Form Is Going Straight To Hell
DebHop replied to Reegesc's topic in Leatherwork Conversation
In my home town, (SW Virginia) , the Tandy shop closedown back in the 80’s. The next closest Tandy is 200 miles from me. We do have a local saddle shop, but unless you need horse gear - owner says “look on the internet”. All but a few shoe/leather repair shops have closed. One shop in business for over 40 years had to close. The owner tried to find someone to learn his craft, offered to GIVE the business to, but couldn’t find anyone willing. Sad... unfortunately, I am at the mercy of the web for all my tools and materials. and fortunately; I have places like this forum - to learn from so many talented and generous folks. -
You could also try Angelus Professional Leather Preparer And Deglazer. works great in prepping shoes for decorative painting.

Most of what I learned about leather, lace making, and braiding (plaiting); I learned from the master - Bernie Wojcicki. Although I didn't know him personally, I watched every video on his Youtube channel and referred to them often. Bernie used MS Word to create his whip patterns and it works OK, but I wanted more automation and flexibility. I have since found an online site called Faceplait that is super easy to use, and allows you to experiment with different patterns and see how it looks before you start plaiting. It also gives you row by row OU steps to follow. This really helps keep your place when you stop and start. I didn't see this mentioned in the forums here, but if this is old news, I hope I haven't wasted your time. The program is very easy to use. Perhaps you'll find it helpful: http://www.whipinfo.com/

I have several in 3 colors – 3 Red, 3 White, and 4 Natural. Stitch pattern is different than White and Natural (see pics). Each is approximately 10-15 Sq. Ft. Can be used for bags, garments, upholstery etc. $25 ea. Plus shipping, or if you’re interested in all 10 shoot me an offer.

I bought this several years ago and I’m not sure where. It has no markings indicating a Hanson, but there so many versions out there I’ll make no claims. However; it works beautifully to pair and bevel lace. Sadly, arthritis and hand surgeries have limited my abilities to make my own lace much longer. I have resorted to pre-cut roo lace – and it works well. $250 plus shipping via PayPal. I'm in Virginia PM me if interested

I’ve had this for several years, and it always worked well for me. Arthritis has slowed me down, and I've not used it in a while; so the blade may need sharpening. $100 plus shipping via PayPal. I'm in Virginia PM me if interested.

Free vintage pattern book: Le Cuir. Compositions Decoratives – author Jehan Raymond (published in 1908) pattern book has some wonderful and unique Art Nouveau designs for leather work - pocket cases and wallets, cigarette boxes, bindings, calendars, music portfolios etc. The descriptions are written in French. This is a PDF (240MB) on Google drive: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Lc95mJPz-dwGupVhW2XmYGis4D5fcvpz A few of us are fortunate enough to own a hard copy of this treasure, I searched for 2 years to find my mine (and paid dearly for it). Now, because of its age; it was added to Public Domain in 2016. *This book is very rare, some copies are preserved and archived in some museums - MET. I hope you find these awesome patterns and illustrations useful. Big thanks to Letter T for condensing the PDF, Nuttish, Chirsash, and Buttermutt07 for testing the link on multiple platforms. P.S. Source files are in the Library of Congress - National Archives site. Enjoy, Deb

Wow chrisash, you must have been a tester in another life. LOL Glad the PDF worked. The other file has each page in JP2 format. I don't have Coreldraw so couldn't open the file, sounds like it worked well. No, I don't tool or carve much but I know there are folks on this site that could 'rok' some of the designs. thanks again

PM sent. I just want to make sure it works before I post. Thank you for helping.

I'd like to share some pattern/design files with the community, and I need someone to help me test the link and make sure it works before I post it. I have the files on Google Drive, I can send the link and if it works properly; I'll submit my post. Anyone up for it?

I don't sell anything I make but I love to buy stuff for my bike. Couple years ago I paid 175 for a very simple bag at the Harley store cause I needed the storage. Something custom for that bike I'd think be worth twice that at least.

Hey BigMat, in the pic below shows where the strap laces through the back of the bag so you can weave it around the sissy bar. as for that beautiful Indian, you may need a little modification -- maybe move the slots up some. then, the loop on top is meant to wrap around the top of the sissy bar, but with that back rest it may not work. it shouldn't be too difficult to fit it to the rack and strap it on. Please share when you get it together, I'm a big fan of the Indian. and let me know if you have other questions.

I cut mine out of buffalo - about 10-12 oz. I hope I can manage it. Haven't stitched it yet, waiting for some time off from work. I'm sure Veggie Tan will work very nicely as well. If you plan to us it on a motorcycle I'd think 8-10 oz would be good and sturdy.

Posted to the Bike forum, but didn't seem to be any interest there. Maybe the term 'Sissy Bar' is a turn off these days. But it's all good. http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=63586
