When spreading out contact glue and rubber cement, I use small plastic putty knives. can get at any super store or hardware store really cheap

since this is your first one, you might consider purchasing a kit from springfield leather, or tandy. might make thing a bit easier for you to start, and you can trace the leather in the kit and get a pattern out of it for future use

try an invisible ink pad, then after it dries, stain the leather. my daughter tried it and it left an image of her horse in a darker stain, looks really cool

New Wanting To Get Into Making Coats/jackets And Boots
Sturme replied to Dozam's topic in Getting Started
Bighouse daddy has a book you need on boots. http://www.bighousedaddy.com/custom_western_boot_making.htm it's a start -
case it, let it set and cover it when not tooling. People use ziplock bags, plastic sheets, plastic bags, and store it in a fridge if not working it for a extended length of time. Personally, for small pieces I use mylar plastic I got at a art supply shop. they are 8.5 X11 in a pad like I notepad that covers small projects well. generally you can case it once and it will last a while.

Leatherwork can be a moneymaking hobby, and for some a profitable full time income. but you cant just put a price on something without taking into account some things, example: your time involved, your skill level, materials including dye and finish, and quality. you stated above that your putting profitability above all else, if I were you I would revise that and make quality and a range of affordability above all. you can make a boatload of products, but if they are subpar, then you retain no customers. and word of mouth will loose you more business. Since your more into the renfair business make belts and pouches starting out. forget about profitability. just worry about quality. look around at fairs, you will see loads of profitability with crappy items. make quality and your name will grow making you more.

thanks, she is using a tandy adjustable. the width is ok for her, but its too tall. I think I will send leather wranglers a email and see what they can do. I want her to stick with tandy blades cause I don't want her using anything real sharp. I know they can do one compatible with tandy blades. If you do come up with a shorter one drop me a line. I would definatly buy it.

Does anyone have any information on where I can get a small swivel knife for my 6 year old daughter. she has decided to learn the trade. She used one of my old ones last night but its to big for her to control easily. Thanks

I am tactfully impaired, so I don't mean to sound cocky or anything with this. Money clips are put in your front pants pockets, well away from your wallet in general. you should never use a money clip to secure a credit card, it will wipe it. if you carry a credit card in your from pants pocket, make sure to use the other pocket away from a magnet money clip.

I use the magnets from Tandy, you can also get them from Springfield leather. they work great. they have 2 metal plates use them against the leather and the magnets sticking to them. the plates seem to act as a barrior that helps prevent the magnets from attracting things to stick from the outside of your project.

if tarrago uses a pigment dye then you need it use a rag or a cloth to apply it. if that is the case you might consider using a liquid latex rubber and paint it around the areas you are dyeing white to contain it. then you just peel the rubber off and continue with the rest of your dyeing after it dries. I would try this method on a scrap piece first to be safe. good luck.

cova color will work for small to moderate areas, just remimber that is an acrylic. and white will take multiple coats, so go easy and build up. use extra coats of resolene, or (yes i am going ot say it everyone, lol) super shene or satin shene.

I do not think words exist to describe this. its amazing.

Facebook might seem an odd way to advertise, but “likes” on Facebook do get people’s attention. One thing I am doing is every month I take a small item and pick a person randomly from my “like” list and notify them that they have won my monthly contest. It doesn’t seem like much but these people start to talk and I end up with more likes from it. I do pay shipping on the item so that person isn’t out anything at all. It doesn’t have to be anything special or big, but on occasion you might throw in a clutch purse or wallet on a holiday. It lets people know your real, and makes them feel special along the way.

I am tempted to try this one out http://www.micromark.com/microlux-mini-scroll-saw-for-hobby-use,7114.html They have blades for it up to 40 tpi. It might work for some of the detail work I want to do. And them sand the edges.

would a sanding blade, or a spiral blade work for a scroll saw? http://www.sears.com.../p-00927065000P http://www.amazon.co...t/dp/B001G9Z0JU

Since working on PC's is my day job, I thought I would pass this along. The fbi malware virus has evolved and the new version of this is nearly impossible to remove. But it has been discovered that is a flash program. You can change your flash settings in the control panel to help prevent this from hitting. if you want to change those settings 1: go to control panel, 2: click on flash player, 1: under storage change the setting to "block all sites from storing information on this computer". 3: under camera and mic tab change setting to "block all sites from using the camera and microphone". 4: Under playback tab change setting to "block all sites from using peer-assisted networking" That’s it, it basically mean that any flash animations of video will have to completely stream, not buffer. But it’s worth it, if anyone here has been hit by this malware they know what I mean. If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask.

I have been looking and cant find anything on them. A friend of mine runs a trading post that deals in historically authentic goods, and was wanting to know if there was a date when they were first used.
