  1. I have looked at a few companies to order a tree from.precision, bowden, and Steele (not the flex tree).anyone have any input or recommendations between them? I'm making the saddle for my horse that can be harder to fit, so ordering the tree that fits him best would be a priority.
  2. It wasn't just a speck or two, the top coat made the whole piece a murky color,I even painted just the yellow area with top coat and the black still pulled through...? I let it dry, re painted the yellow paint on, and left it
  3. I have a black and yellow piece I'm trying to Finish.yellow is acrylic paint, black is oil dye.I painting on a Finnish to keep the yellow from turning black.didn't work, still turns black.what can I use that won't bleed? The paint alone won't hold up I don't think
  4. I did try that, no luck.so I resorted to acetone to get most off,I wiped it down good, then applied more dye to get even color back.I left out in front of fan for tonight, tomorrow is a new day, hopefully a less destructive one!
  5. Will acetone remove bag kote? Or some thing else I can but locally?
  6. I didn't thin it, it is already watery, so didn't know I had to??I put it on with a sponge brush.
  7. I got bag kote, applied it and it's all streaky. What's the trick? Not impressed so far.not sure how I will fix it?
  8. Got #1 and 2... almost done with 2 entirely, only flipped thorugh one to start.. best $60 i ever spent for anything how to or educational. anyone could follow these books they are so thorough. Great recommendation from all those who told me about it!
  9. If a cantle can be ordered in a 3x1.5x13, what exactly does that mean? I assume 3 would be height and 13 is probably width. What is the middle number? Also, how do you choose the gullet height when ordering a saddle? And what can you tell me about different styles of bars? I am looking at Bowden site, and they make their trees with Arizona bars. What other kinds of bars are there? Any really good links to differnet tree and bar info? I clearly need tree education. Thanks in advance!
  10. yes
  11. I an looking at Bowden, Steel and maybe precision trees. I am planning to build a barrel saddle. I like the equi fit idea they have so you know what fits. I ask not interested in the flex tree.how do these compare?
  12. Month of Feb, tandy has Al stohlman books 1 and 2 on sale for $29.00. That's about half price of any where I looked.
  13. Dyed this with oil dye.applied Neatsfoot oil to the back, accidentally got a spot on front, so had to oil whole thing to keep it from spotting. Now the right side is darker, this has Sat over night,I tried the fan and even blow dryer to make sure it's dry. I have not applied any finish yet. Picture would help
  14. Thanks, that's easy enough to try.
  15. If I fold this deerskin in half and cut new fringe to make it thicker, will that make it stop curling? Fold in half, glue it together, then cut it?
  16. i love the above videos, very helpful
  17. i have been doing exactly what you guys said! its just really hard to get that ledge. I think i need to really hit the area good with the yellow dye, then very carefully do the bat itself in black. Would it help to dye the yellow, seal it with a topcoat, then dye the black, so if the black spatters at all, it will wipe off top coat?
  18. It is 3 by 6", its a small pony Bronc nose band I'm using fiebings oil dye.started out heat with a dry brush, until I realized I want getting that little raised edge like I thought.precise piece so its ok.
  19. I'm trying to make the Batman symbol.started great, carved the bat and the black outlined edge.my problem came in the the little tiny edge where I beveled, the tiny raised edge.I had trouble getting color there without bleeding over.how can I get nice crisp dye lines? Here's the piece before I tried during it.luckily a trial piece.I'm very, this is my first figure carving so don't judge carving to harshly, lol. novice

  22. How do I cut nice clean, square corners when I am cutting inlay shapes?I can get a good corner, so my diamonds turn out like ovals? Not sure how to add a photo on here?
  23. Problem solved.I took a step back, flipped through a catalog and discovered the domed rivet setters.I was trying to set a domed rivet with a till too flat.also discovered the longer posts on the rivets. Yesterday was a bad day, but I am better now that I realized I'm just trying to fit a square in a round place, loll.thank you both.great links
