  1. Now I'm impressed...and also going to get back into the shop and do more practice! KUDOS!
  2. Sorry ninety5percent....totally missed your question! I dyed the edges..... Thanks!
  3. Thanks everyone......good feedback papaw...I'm about 4mm from the edge, need to work on getting closer....
  4. Just a couple of new tests. First a slip case for my Nexus 7. Simple design was happy my calculations actually worked and everything fit perfectly, just good snug and with a little work it slides in and out nice and tight: Then a wrap for a small moleskin. I figured I'd screw up on a small one and waste less leather. Still a bit tight, off in my measurements by about 2mm but it does close and stays closed lol. Both items I used veg tanned leather, 3-4oz. feibings oil dyes. Air brush on...buffed, buffed with canaruba cream, buffed again. Then 2 light coats of Resolyne sealer 50/50 with water also with the airbrush. The small moleskin first use of Tiger Thread. Other thread I had is now in garbage can lol. Comments & feedback welcome. Still working on design scale, should have made the moleskin "snap" a little thinner....would be the right size on a bigger notebook...
  5. I did but didn't call it out I don't think. Been working on the whole sunburst effect. A holster type I've worked on with the sunburst effect Another attempt at the sunburst effect on a Nexus 7 case Small moleskin "wrap"....close up shows the Tiger Thread Wish I could draw or cut a straight line ;-)
  6. Gotcha! Looks like it was maybe sponged on? Has a great antique look without using the antique! Nice mix of colors in the dye and contrast with the middle.... I've been using an airbrush....makes life so much easier for consistency....but can't get that nice antique look.....Im going to try that on one of my next items....
  7. Yep! That's the place! Been nice to deal with when something was out of stock they call me up always nice. Actually carry most everything I like to use....where tandy does not (better price too) I'm sure other folks out there are nice too just easy since it is up the road and a quick ship...if I run out in the week can usually have it before the weekend. I've also picked up leather from TheLeatherGuy on Ebay and it was as much better than Tandy's mid level....maybe not as nice as Tandy's top grain stuff but closer in price to the mid stuff, cheaper actually. Waterhouse leather I have tried a couple of pieces all very nice. These guys now have Tiger thread here in the US and for a reasonable price: http://ludlowleather.com He had a thread (pun intended) on here a few weeks back & I tried it....fast ship two days.... I just have the 1mm white and LOVE it...hands love it too.... Also love the coloring on your weekender...How did you do that? Very very nice...
  8. Oh btw if you haven't you have to try the Tiger thread....makes hand stitching SOO much easier....Looks like you didn't use it for that one?
  9. Ah yeah ok I know the leather you are talking about. I'll have to try some! Yeah I hit the Tandy on Jimmy Carter up on a regular basis lol you have probably seen me in there.....Love the bags you make hope to get to see some in person sometime! I like using Zack's....from here every order has been at my door in 2 days if I order early enough to get it on the UPS truck....except during the snowpacalypse we had LOL. BUT haven't tried their leather yet, just dyes and supplies that Tandy doesn't carry (The pro oil dyes mostly) was going to order some of their 3 oz veg tan for some testing to see how it is!
  10. Love it! Curious what type of leather is that? Love the texture....
  11. I would love to see how this is done and your results!!!
  12. Oh interesting JoeSnuffie...I've never seen that at my local Tandy (Atlanta)...at least I don't think so. I've tried the "waxed Nylon Thread" (It is ok but tears my hands up) and the Tejas Waxed thread (did not like it one bit WAY too much wax)..as well as the plain nylon thread (way too thin)....but haven't seen what you are showing there, do you have a SKU # for it? I'll look next trip I go, and that seems to be quite often ;-)
  13. For me the difference is that the Tiger thread lays flat, vs round with the Tandy. When stitching it just lays flat on the leather. Also the wax in the thread is amazing, it feels wonderful and "built in" to the thread not like the Tandy that feels like it is just caked on.... The Tandy thread tears up my hands when stitching, where as the Tiger is actually a pleasure to work with, it glides thru the holes so much easier too (probably the flat and the wax).... I'll be ordering more for sure!
  14. Just my $0.02, I just got a roll of Tiger from Stefan and have to say I'll never use Tandy thread again! The stuff is simply amazing...even if just white.....
  15. Having some fun trying out different techniques with this test: 1 Carving: Took some images, traced them into inkscape, produces SVG's then scaled them to fit the holster. Practiced some basic carving techniques, I need way more practice for sure... 2 Played around with painting, colored the flames and the background...used tandy acrylics for that... 3 Resist, couple coats of super sheen over the whole scene, letting it dry each step 24 hours.... 4 Mahogany antique, slapped that on then buffed it off with a paper towel.... 5 another coat of resisit, wait 24 hours 6 wet formed/glue/stitch. Still had some run off! Agh! Maybe I should have wet formed before painting step 2? Any comments or feedback is appreciated!
  16. Thanks everyone for your feedback...pretty fun project to see if I could "eyeball" and add to a design.. After a week+ of testing the fit/retention from the MultiGun mold is dead on. I may have to pick up some more models!
  17. I picked up the dummy gun from knifekits.com site. It is pretty cool it has the trigger guard filled in and the sight channel filled in as well. Resulted in a very tight fit! I saw one of the big names (don't recall which) with a similar design at a show....like the anti print concept didn't like some other features, sat down with some buddies that carry who gave some input...one is a lefty who likes to complain about lack of lefty gun support so that produced the reversible idea lol...
  18. That came out nice!!! Will put that on my to make list as well....
  19. Hi there! After a couple of design iterations, my wallet holster design is nearly complete. A buddy of mine is field testing it hope to have feedback in a couple of weeks, see how it holds up to real field use... I have a couple of cool features, added a brace strap to help with the thumb extraction. Also used screws so the holster can go from lefty to righty (and back again) by the end user....or they can ditch the wallet portion all together if they need to. I've tested this design with the LCP, TCP and Sig p238, all seem to wear well (even tho the pinky extension on the TCP does poke out a bit, the regular mag does not). Should work with other models just need some more blue guns (Or the real things lol) Not sure the design could handle a revolver or bigger gun than that.... Any feedback or critique is welcome!
  20. Well I am still rather new (less than I year) so don't have much to compare with the Leather Balm (Zack's called and substituted it because they were out of the Feibings Carnuaba Cream). I use it over the dye IF I haven't done any tooling. Anything that gets tooled gets oiled after the tooling before the dye, at least that is what I am doing based on my readings and well it's working so far. The Cream makes the leather feel amazing. It does seem to darken the leather a smidge, just barely, so I tend to stop the dye layers one short of where I think I want to go. I do use Resolene after thru the airbrush as well. Fine mist you can't even tell it is on there after you are done. Couple of passes, 24 hour wait to cure and one more set of passes and I'm ready to buff then I'm done. You can't beat an airbrush for putting on thin coats! Like anything, play around with the combinations on scrap pieces see what you like!
  21. I have a Badger 360 but would go with an Iwata if I had a second chance. BUT the Badger is better than a dauber any day of the week!
  22. I love my airbrush, once I started using it I learned I may never use a dauber again! I use the Feibing Oil Dye, thinned 50/50 with denatured to shoot out the brush with. I also picked up an airbrush cleaning station, basically a big heavy glass jar that you can rest your brush in. It has a filter and a hole in it, you can shoot all you want into the jar and it stays in the jar, pretty neat. Between colors I run denatured thru the brush (keep some in a separate jar) just pop off the color I was using slap on the denatured run a few good blasts into the cleaning jar, then pop on the new color, couple quick blasts into the jar to get it primed, then a quick test on some paper to make sure before heading to the leather...and I try to go from lighter to darker during my sessions anyway...ending in black if at all possible... When finished run denatured thru really well into the jar....quick teardown and wipedown with denatured usually has me spic and span. I have a ultrasonic cleaner I'll tear the brush all the way down and toss it into with 50/50 simple green and water and give it a couple cycles, all clean! For Resolene same process just use water instead of denatured. Dye is very easy to clean compared to some paints I've shot before
